Tohoku university, “Radiocesium is more concentrated in the fetus than in the mother of Fukushima cattle”

On 1/23/2013, researching group of the experts published the report about the internal exposure of cattle abandoned in evacuation zone.

The result shows radionuclides are more concentrated in children than mothers. It can happen to human beings too.

<Quote> [PLOS ONE]

The transfer of radionuclides from mother to fetus is one of the major concerns of exposure to internal radiation. As mentioned above, we had collected 3 pregnant cows. The comparison between radiocesium activity concentration in the fetus and the mother is shown in Figure 2A. Most symbols lay on the upper part of the dashed equality line (fetus side). The regression analysis of all tested organs showed that the activity concentration of cesium was 1.19 times higher (R2 = 0.62, SE = 0.12) in fetal organs than in the corresponding maternal organs. Cesium is considered to transfer freely between mother and fetus and is assumed to be uniformly distributed throughout all the tissues of the fetus [8]. These observations indicate that radiocesium is more concentrated in the fetus than in the mother. Although Silver and Tellurium are transplacental [9]–[11], neither 110mAg nor 129mTe was detectable in the fetal organs examined, indicating that these radionuclides were efficiently captured by the mother’s organs and were not delivered to the fetus. In order to understand fetal biokinetics of each radionuclide we tried to collect PB from the fetus. However, we could not obtain sufficient quantities to enable the measurement of radioactivity.

Figure 2. Comparison of 137Cs activity concentration between mother and offspring.
A. Organ 137Cs activity concentration between 3 pairs of mother and her fetus. B. Organ 137Cs activity concentration between 3 pairs of mother and her child. The dashed line indicates the slope at which 137Cs activity concentration in organs is equal between mothers and their corresponding offsprings. Points above this line indicate that offspring 137Cs activity concentration in an organ was higher than that of the mother. The bold line is the regression line obtained from all organs.

Before the cattle were euthanized, we noticed 3 mother and infant pairs in Plot 2. We confirmed that these infants were born after the FNPP accident and that they were being weaned at the time. As shown in Figure 2B, most of the points lie on the upper side of the dashed equality line (infant side). The regression analysis showed that radiocesium activity concentration was 1.51 times higher in the infant organs than in the corresponding maternal organs (R2 = 0.70, SE = 0.09). Therefore, we concluded that the deposition of 137Cs in infant organs is correlated with that in the corresponding maternal organs but is higher than that in maternal ones. Shorter half-lives of retention are adopted for infants and children than for adults [12]. Inaba et al. mentioned that water and electrolyte metabolism should differ considerably between newborn and adult, and that potassium contents of the feeding might affect the radiocesium activity concentration [13]. We do not have any data regarding the proportion attributed to milk and grass which the infants were taking at the time of the sacrifice.

Figure 2.

    1. Will the authors ( scientists ) of this research have the wisdom , curiosity , inspiration or forthsight , i.e. ‘common sense’ , to Order/Call for examination of the human Placenta or aborted fetuses around Japan ?

Waiting for an answer from Fukuda T, Kino Y, Abe Y, Yamashiro H, Kuwahara Y, et al. (2013) .

      Great dig iori ( Iori ) !

  1. This is the problem in the end, there is no escaping the effects on reproduction organs, as eggs in next generation are formed in the fetus and last a lifetime. There is inescapable genetic damage to the 3rd and 4th generation, to the point where there are very few viable offspring in the 4th generation. Detoxifying the cow mother with whatever works, zeolite in the diet, biodynamic farming, may help reduce the amount of cesium in the milk. However, the concentration factors, as known from Chernobyl research cause ongoing lines of mutations, most of which are fatal or deforming in the next generation.
In some areas of the former USSR, where there have been nuclear explosions, nuclear agriculture techniques, such as the Ural mountains and parts of Khazakstan, there is no 4th generation of viable humans.
This is the problem for Japan.
If the Japanese government had any sense it would evacuate young people and children, and let the oldies get stuck in to the clean up.

  2. That is incredibly distressing. That article needs more attention. Especially considering the predisposition of young, especially female offspring, to radiological (and other) contamination, upwards of 20x the sensitivity, maybe more for cattle.
Sadly, it is like they have turned the calf’s mother’s love, that is her milk, against her calf. Many things seem so backwards now.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
