208 Bq/Kg from rice produced even in Miyagi

According to Miyagi prefectural government, 208 Bq/Kg and 186 Bq/Kg of cesium (Safety limit = 100 Bq/Kg) were measured from rice produced in Miyagi. These were measured on 12/5/2012 and 12/13/2012.

They were for self-consumption, not shipped out supposedly.

The reason is presumed to be

1. The farm field was left fallow for 40 years, weeds were growing during 311.

2. Because the large farm machine couldn’t get into the farm field, cesium was accumulated in the shallow layer of soil.

3. Because of the compost was not enough, potassium density was low, rice absorbed more cesium. (cf, Cesium measured from 60 % of compost in Fukushima but 86 % of them were shipped for sale [Link])

The farm field is located in a district of Kurihara city. Miyagi prefectural government required Kurihara city to practice self-control on shipping rice until they check all the rice around the issued district.

However, Kurihara city is already required to practice self-control on shipping 10 other sorts of agricultural products made in a district within the city, such as soy beans, blueberry, mushroom, trout etc..

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
