Following up this article..[Ajisai Revolution] Ex-PM Hatoyama will join the protest in front of official residence

Japanese Ex-prime minister Kan advised Noda, the current Japanese prime minister to meet the organizer of protest.
Kan comments the protest held in front of official residence every Friday is the beginning of the new wave of participation in politics.

On 7/20/2012, another Ex-prime minister Hatoyama gave the same advice to Fujimura chief cabinet secretary.

  2. Does Kan believe that Noda does not understand the anti-nuclear message? Has Noda been sleeping through Diet debates? Has Noda ignored the news stories? Does Noda not read Fukushima Diary or Ex-SKF?

The leaders of the Friday demonstrations have certainly learned a lot about the dangers of nuclear energy, but are they teachers capable of changing Noda’s mind? Will their meeting give Noda the impression that the anti-nuclear message is the TRUTH? Or will Noda see the demonstration leaders message as “wishful, childish thinking” and the demonstrators as “noisy people who don’t really understand the issues, people I must ignore in order to do the right thing for Japan.”

If you want Noda to become more knowledgeable, if you don’t want to leave him with the impression that the anti-nuke message is nonsense, then his meeting schedule should also include people like Jonathan Schell and Arnie Gundersen, persons who both understand why nuclear power is not the answer to the world’s energy needs, AND also have shown that they understand how to articulate that message using clear and convincing words.

I’m doubtful that Noda’s meeting with me, with Mochizuki-san, or with one or more people from the Friday demonstration leadership would be of much help to his education, but if the invitation does come, then the demonstration leaders should try to bring Jonathan or Arnie, or others like them to the meeting.

Don’t remember Jonathan? The following powerful essay has helped move people from supporting nuclear to rejecting nuclear in the wake of Fukushima: (in Japanese and English)
    http://peacephilosophy.blogspot.jp/2011/06/nuclear-power-requires-perfection.html
Maybe it can help Noda, if he is willing to listen.

As for Arnie, he can explain a better way forward for Japan’s energy industry – without nuclear. It’s a path that Japan WILL eventually adopt. The sooner Japan does so, the sooner Japan will achieve true energy security, and the better Japan’s opportunity to win international business in helping other economies do the same.

Arnie’s best selling book (in Japanese)
    http://www.amazon.co.jp/福島第一原発-―真相と展望-集英社新書-アーニー・ガンダーセン/dp/4087206289/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1342905902&sr=1-1
If Noda has not read it, he should. If he has any questions about it, Arnie’s phone number is +1 802 865 9955. I’m pretty sure Arnie would accept Noda’s call and talk him through any concerns.

I’m still not optimistic about convincing Noda to stop his nuclear war against the Japanese people, but my key point here is that if a meeting is offered and accepted, the demonstrators need to make the most of it – bringing the most articulate, informed and respected speakers with them to any meeting. Failing this, they risk strengthening Noda’s negative opinion of the anti-nuke message.

One more thing: Prior to actually attending any person-to-person meeting with Noda, the demonstrators invited should send Noda a packet of pre-reading, and/or a pre-meeting video to watch. Noda should be asked to review the material BEFORE the meeting. He may or may not review it in advance, but if he does, the meeting would have twice the influence that it otherwise might. And certainly someone among his co-conspirators would eventually read portions of the material, so, at a minimum, you will have touched at least one other person in Noda’s inner circle with the anti-nuclear message.

This packet of pre-reading / pre-viewing must include evidence of the human rights violations and human suffering already caused by the Fukushima disaster (this is why we don’t want nuclear power!) . The packet should also explain the way forward WITHOUT nuclear power, and show that it is possible to begin along this path starting TODAY. If the packet can also provide Noda a roadmap to the future and a list of the first few months’ specific action steps needed (not just to shut down the reactors, but to build the new energy infrastructure), this would also help.

Finally, please consider that, so far, Noda has been bombarded with nuclear industry insider messages that claim big power plants are essential to providing continuous baseline power. This is simply not true, but moving Noda will require debunking this strongly held belief. If you cannot overcome this objection, don’t bother going to the meeting. You’ll only convince him that you are nothing more than noise-makers.

So in the end, a meeting with Noda could help if managed properly and if the right people join. On the other hand, this invitation could backfire if the persons attending are unable to explain why nuclear power cannot work, and also articulate a clear path forward for Japan’s energy policy.

  3. *** Re-posting **** This is an abridged version of a message I tried to post yesterday, but which is sitting in moderation still (maybe too long, many the links?).

Are the leaders of the Friday demonstrations capable of changing Noda’s mind? Or will their meeting only give Noda the impression that the anti-nuclear message is “wishful, childish thinking” and the demonstrators as “noisy people who don’t really understand the issues, people I must ignore in order to do the right thing for Japan?”

For any hope of changing Noda’s mind, his meeting schedule should also include people like Jonathan Schell and Arnie Gundersen, persons who both understand why nuclear power is not the answer to the world’s energy needs, AND also have proven ability to articulate that message. If the demonstration leader is invited, can he bring Arnie, Jonathan, or others like them to the meeting also?

Please understand that Noda probably believes the pro-nuclear propaganda that big power plants are essential to providing continuous baseline power. This is simply not true, but moving Noda, changing Noda’s mind, will require debunking this strongly held belief. If you cannot overcome this objection, anti-nukers should not bother going to the meeting. They’ll only convince Noda that we are nothing more than noise-makers.

This invitation could backfire if the persons attending are unable to explain why nuclear power cannot work, and also articulate a clear path forward for Japan’s energy policy.

Need help? Look to Arnie Gundersen’s recent Japanese book and/or Mark Jacobson’s work at Stanford. Also google “Nuclear Power Requires Perfection” and “Jonathan Schell” There is at least one Japanese translation of this excellent essay available online.

  4. *** Re-posting *** the following are also covered by my original message (still awating moderation as of 23-JUL)

    Some additional thoughts.

If invited to a meeting with Noda, the demonstration leaders should ask Noda to do some meeting preparation (pre-meeting reading). Before agreeing to a meeting, the demonstration leaders should provide Noda a packet of pre-reading, and/or a pre-meeting video to watch. He may or may not review it in advance, but if he does, the meeting would have twice the influence that it otherwise might.

Of course, as explained above, if Noda allows you to bring others to the meeting, demonstrators would be well advised to invite Arnie, Jonathan, or others who might be able to win Noda’s mind.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
