Multi-nuclide removal equipment suspended because “Touch pen was too big to operate”

Tepco is running out of the capacity to stock contaminated water. In order to minimize the risk of stocking contaminated water, Tepco is installing the multi-nuclide removal equipment (ALPS), but it was suspended on 4/4/2013.

Tepco reported like this,

– The cause of incorrect operation

The “Operation Switch” was selected by mistake when trying to select the “Common Facility Screen” which is used for operation data collection.

The reaction scope of the touch pen used to operate the touch panel was too large due to its big tip.

Then, upon screen transition, the “C Tank” switch in the sample tank selection menu used to select the destination of treated water was selected by mistake.

Since there was a time lag from button selection to screen transition, the tank switching button was selected by mistake at the moment of screen transition.

Tepco est en manque de capacité de stockage des eaux contaminées. Pour minimiser le risque de stocker les eaux contaminées, Tepco est en train d’installer le système de filtrage multi-nucléides (ALPS), mais il a été arrêté le 4 avril 2013.

Tepco en dit ceci :

– Cause de l’opération incorrecte

L’ “interrupteur opératoire” a été sélectionné par erreur en essayant de sélectionner l’écran  “Common Facility Screen” qui est utilisé pour la collecte des données opératoires.
L’aire de toucher de la région tactile de cette partie de l’écran tactile est trop grande à cause de son gros maillage.
Ainsi, pendant le changement d’écran, le bouton “réservoir C” sur l’exemple de menu de sélection de réservoir utilisé pour choisir la destination des eaux traitées a été sélectionné par erreur.
Comme il y a un temps de réaction entre la sélection du bouton et l’écran de transition, le bouton de choix de réservoir a été sélectionné par erreur pendant la transition d‘écran.

Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
