I-131 detected 9km NW of Fukushima plant 2.5 hours before the first venting of reactor1

According to METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), I-131 was measured in Namiemachi 2.5 hours before the first venting of reactor1. The sample was the dust in atmosphere.

The volume was 37 Bq/m3, location was in 8.8 km North West of Fukushima plant. The measurement time was 8:39 ~ 8:49 of 3/12/2011. The first venting was 11:00 but it went only partially successful.

From the research of Fukushima Diary, Tepco vented reactor1 AFTER nuclear fuel melted through the RPV of reactor1 TWICE.

(cf, Tepco vented PCV of reactor1 after nuclear fuel melted through the RPV, twice [URL])

Also 1.8 Bq/m3 of Cs-137, 90 Bq/m3 of I-132, 73 Bq/m3 of Te-132 were measured from the same sample. The reading of Cs-134 wasn’t reported.

The data means radioactive material was already released largely even before the venting that ended up failing.

Fukushima Diary also posted this from the same report of METI, “1,230,000 Bq/Kg of I-131 was measured from vegetation on 3/15/2011 [URL]”

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
