[Avian flu] 3 medical staff had upper respiratory tract infection after treating the 1st patient

On 4/25/2013, Taiwan CDC announced a man (53) from Taiwan had avian influenza (H7N9) for the first case.

According to Centers for Disease Control , R.O.C.(Taiwan), three medical staff had upper respiratory tract infection after treating the first patient. They were wearing the protective equipment.

They reported this below,


On the other hand, while delivering healthcare services, three healthcare workers who were geared with appropriate personal protective equipment developed symptoms of upper respiratory infection. The public health authority have conducted thorough health education activities for all contacts, issued them with “Self-Health Management Advice for H7N9 Influenza”, and will be following up with them closely until the period of voluntary contact tracing is lifted.


They are also suggesting the risk of infection from the direct contact with bird’s droppings.

L’autorité de santé publique a procédé à des formations sanitaires pour tous les gens en contact, leur a fourni une brochure de “Recommandations de surveillance personnelle contre la grippe à H7N9” (“Self-Health Management Advice for H7N9 Influenza”) et va les suivre étroitement jusqu’à ce que la période de recherche par contacts volontaires soit terminée.

Ils suggèrent aussi un risque d’infection à partir du contact direct avec les déjections des oiseaux :

“prendre des mesures préventives telles qu’éviter tout contact direct avec les volailles, les oiseaux ou leurs excréments”

They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
