50 of 87 Green turtle’s eggs were deformed

Sea turtles are acting strange.
Mr. Mizobuchi Yukio, the chairman of sea turtle association of Japan, found out 50 of 87 green turtle’s eggs were deformed.

Normal eggs are 4 cm diameter but deformed ones are 6 cm diameter and various width. The smallest egg was only 1.5 cm diameter.

They were deposited early in the morning of 6/5/2011, in Hirano surf beach, Shimanto shi Kochi. On 6/4, the turtle came to a different beach called Futami kaigan, where it was born. However, it went back to the sea without leaving eggs and deposited eggs in Hirano surf beach, where it wasn’t born. This is unusual case for sea turtles.

Last year, sea turtles deposited eggs from 5/17~8/4 in Hirano surf beach. It was 5/22~8/4 in Futami kaigan. However, this year, they deposited eggs on 6/5 for the first time in Hirano surf beach. In Futami kaigan, they deposited eggs in 5/12 but didn’t come back until 6/3.

this is so heartbreaking.. but thank you for bringing the issue to light for the rest of the world

So sad. How much more damage will show up over the years?
    So very sad!

Nooooooo! Where are these beaches off Japan, in relation to Fuku? Green sea turtles are extremely endearing, IMHO, and so utterly endangered.

    And so it begins.

  5. The consequences are just beginning…

I understand the “shame” and “lying” cultural traits of Japan. I really do…but it does not belong where the whole world is concerned. WTF? Saving face in the expense of the well being of the planet is stupid. Move beyond it Japan. Here’s another…

You don’t hear anyone(of authority) discussing this in the states. We’re getting the fallout on the west coast and in Canada. Also no mention of the results on Iraqis experiencing deformities and death as a result of our genocidal depleted uranium bombs. I put people just a tad ahead of turtles

It says that the turtles had deformed eggs in 2009 too. I’m not saying that it has absolutely nothing to do with radiation, but 2009 is before the Fukushima problem. Does anyone know where Kochi is? Shimanto is?

I am seeing more and more articles like this on Fukushima Diary. Fukushima is horrible and it is ongoing. But grasping at straws for the sake of fear mongering and is worse. Mochizuki should provide sea turtle swimming routes for the last 365 days to prove that the turtles indeed lived off the cost of Fukushima then migrated to Tosawan.

    • Mochizuki says:

Key word = “今年は変形多数” (Deformed eggs are unusually many this year)(This year = 2011)

      • D says:

So this year they had “MANY”. how do you explain the deformed eggs in 2009 before Fukushima disaster?

Was some company dumping dioxin into the sea? Was there a quasi meltdown somewhere else? I am not belittling Fukushima. I am just saying that the word “MANY” doesnt translate to much when a similar event took place in 2009.

    • Mochizuki says:

The distance between Fukushima and Tosa is nothing in the scale of the sea contamination caused by Tepco.

      • D says:

The dispersal model is a model and just a model. We dont know the acutal contamination toxicity. I am quite sure it is a lot more contaminated than what the government and TEPCO says. I personally dont eat fish in Japan anymore when I go back. But ASR says “we are treating only the surface currents”. The colors look deadly but does not represent toxicity and it is the surface.

If you could provide information on acutal toxicity, of the surrounding waters, I would be more than willing to believe you. But I know you cant. Toxic waste at ocean level is not the same as toxic level at 100 meters below surface. I am not even sure if anyone actually took sea water samples throughout Japan. If they did, well the government would not allow such info to be published.

All I am trying to do is bring it to your attention that some of the articles you are starting to post are becoming more hearsay, and it is a shame because you were doing a better job a while back.
