[Sea contamination is beyond your imagination]

Tohoku earthquake:
sewage sludge and incinerator ash containing radioactive material not exeeding the countries safety limit, to be dumped in sea/ Prefecture Kanagawa

transport starting from middle of this month

on 9th Yokohama city announced to dispose of about 2700 tons of sewage sludge and incinerator ash containing radioactive material, which was stored in Yokohama city´s sewage treatment plants from may and which is regarded safe, in the Minamimotomaki (please someone japanese check this name) waste disposal site. Transport is starting from as early as middle of this month.

According to the cities sewage system facility management department, 2 of the cities sewage plants (southern and northern sewage sludge conversion center- please check translation) are reaching full capacity by as soon as end of this month.

Both of the facilities sewage sludge and incinerator ash are containing a maximum of 6468 bq/kg and therefore don´t exceed the countries safety limit of 8000 bq/kg for burying waste set in june.

The city moved forward with the plan after a safety assessment was implemented and the standards for utilization of the site after burying where also cleared.

On 8th the current amount of sewage sludge and incinerator ash managed by the prefectures 4 sewage treatment plants have been 2836 tons.
The material is not ecxceeding the safety limit for waste beeing buried but because of opposition by citizens neighbouring Yokosuka´s prefectural waste disposal facilty it could not be accepted there.

Sewage sludge and incinerator ash is usually used as material by cement manufacturers but at the current moment there is no clear standard presented by the manufacturers, the person in charge is sighing .

At the moment the sludge and ash is stored outside under sheets, but for long term storage the construction of a temporary tent is beeing advanced. To say there is a surplus of storage space.

Also Kawasaki city is storing 1365 tons of radioactive sludge and ash at two facilities. The 入江崎 (please romaji) sludge center and a floating island have a capacity of alltogether 5000 tons, and can accept material until the end of the fiscal year. At the moment a safety assessment of burying the waste on the floating island is examined.

[Research on US nuclear levels after Fukushima could aid in future nuclear detection]

The amount of radiation released during the Fukushima nuclear disaster was so great that the level of atmospheric radioactive aerosols in Washington state was 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than normal levels in the week following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the disaster.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
