Tepco no clue to reboot coolant system of Pool of Reactor 5 / Gaining time by emergency measures – Photo [URL]

On 7/7/2014, Tepco announced they have no clue to reboot the coolant system of Reactor 5 Spent Fuel Pool.

Based on their estimate, there is 8 days left until the pool temperature reaches the safety limit of 65℃.

The pictures below show the leakage hole on the valve and their temporary repairs. The gray material is reported to be hardening agent but it is not explained if it’s merely cement or bond.

In order to slower the pool temperature going up, Tepco re-use the coolant system of the reactor itself as the emergency measures, but it causes the risk to let the reactor heated up again.

If the reactor temperature goes over 100℃, it is not the cold shutdown state. Tepco is commenting they still have time until it reaches 100℃ however the heating rate per hour is not announced.

From Tepco’s plant parameter, the temperature of Reactor 5 had rapidly increased since they directed the coolant system to SFP 5 (spent fuel pool in Reactor 5) on 7/8/2014.

Until they got the coolant system back to the normal stand on 7/10/2014, the reactor temperature jumped up from 29℃ to 42.5 ℃ (The graph above is the plotted plant parameters).

This means Reactor 5 is still aggressively heated even though Tepco declares it is in the cold shut down state.

In the meantime, SFP 5 was cooled down from 33℃ to 24 ℃.

Tepco still has no clue to reboot the coolant system of SFP 5. Until they finally restart the coolant system, Tepco will have to play a seesaw game to cool down both of the reactor and pool only by one coolant system.

  1. Substantial Decay Heat

The 6.5C degree per day temperature increase, in SFP-5 is quite linear. The FDU Unit-5 is one of the newer units, which would normally mean less Spent Fuel; unless some of the Unit 4 Spent Fuel has been transferred to the SFP-5.

A glance at the Water Volume of the SPF-5 would produce the Heat Generation of the unit per second in energy/power: Joules, Watts, Calories, BTU or whatever favored units for energy/power (per second). When the Pool Average Temperature reaches about 65C, the water near the hottest Spent Fuel Bundles will begin to locally boil. These Spent Fuel Pools hold a LOT of water so a lot of Decay Heat still. The Older SFP_1-3 will generate more heat.

    1. Yup, Niall was full of shite. “nothings hot enough to melt butter” or whatever.

Pity the poor enenews’ers that have to put up with his incoherant nonsense and distraction now.

      1. Roger That!

Niall is a typical, stupid, dangerous, ‘Team Nuke’ Troll/Shill, and a willing accomplice (before, during & after the fact) to mass murder, pandemic genetic sabotage, crimes against humanity, scientific degradation, and global environmental horror. Deliberately disabling a fire alarm or disaster siren is a criminal act; in (virtually) every jurisdiction and venue on God’s Green Earth. These Team Nuke Pukes should be brought to HARSH, VIOLENT, EXTREME and SUMMARY justice for their manifold crimes against humanity; IMHPO.

The De’NIALL Thermal Output Lies are 10 among 10,000 such ‘Team Nuke’ lies.

        1. “Niall” appears to be AKA “Moe Foe” aka “MF” there.

Stock seems to think he logged his IP @ OakRidge.

          1. A little tip, enenews is stupid and childish, and populated by morons. I couldn’t stand it. Aim a little higher.

            1. Actually‚ you know what? Fuck this, I’m sick of you imbiciles trying to convince yourself that the apocalypse occurred and ev’ryone somehow missed it. Continue about your business, I’ve tired of wasting my time trying to help you out of your hole. Go vomit blood or whatever under your cesium skies,

              1. Still hot

~ 6.5 C temperature rise per day in the newer unit Spent Fuel Pools. About 13 days to approximate local bundle boiling point.

                More deNIALL of the obvious.

                1. Put a fork in him,
                  turn him over,

Take a moment for a sigh of relief, Mr. Duff.
If he was indeed an industry “man” (Oak Ridge janitor – :lol), another of his associates may follow.

            2. How it is that you continue to belittle the cancer survivors and other respectable people proves beyond the shadow of any doubt how inhumane and misguided you are at this moment.

So nice to see how badly you underestimate them, such that you are getting your ass kicked from pillar to post, Monsieur Oak Ridge shill.

Check this out, Mr. Duff. You seem overdue for a good guffaw! 🙂

          1. Why do you rage and imagine a vain thing?
I fear for you. Don’t go down that road, it’s a dead end.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
