FUNABASHI, Chiba Prefecture–Hundreds of people rallied in Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s constituency here June 24 to protest against his decision to reactivate two reactors at the Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture.
The demonstration was organized by several citizens groups calling for a nuclear-free Japan.
Organizers called for supporters to march through the streets of Funabashi to protest Noda’s decision on June 16 to bring the two reactors back online.
A website announcing the planned demonstration said, “Let’s convey our opinions to the prime minister’s hometown.”
Organizers estimated that more than 2,000 people took part, some carrying placards which read, “Saikado wa Damena Noda” (It is not good to restart reactors). The last word is a pun on the prime minister’s surname.
