TV Asahi reported 33 swallows were found dead at the water purification plant in Iida city Nagano on 6/24/2012.
2 of them were picked up but 1 of them died later.
Those swallows were found in the pond, where is to dry sludge taken from river (35m×15m 1.8m deep). The dead bodies were in 30cm~45cm deep in the mud. The sludge contains poly aluminium chloride

Iida city bureau of waterworks comments there was no problem with the quality of water.
Waterworks staff comments they have no idea why swallows died in the pond.
From their radiation test on 5/30/2012, nothing was detected. They are going to conduct radiation measurement for tapwater and sludge of 6/24/2012. The samples of the dead bodies were sent to Rakuno Gakuen University, Yamashina Institute for Ornithology and Nagano Environmental Conservation Research Institute.
In the next pond, 250 swallows were found dead at 9:00 AM of 7/19/2011 as well. The pond was to dry sludge taken from river as well. They were negative for bird flu.
In both times, swallows were found after typhoon or heavy rain.
From May to December of 2011, 1000 Bq/Kg of cesium was measured from human excrement in Nagano.[LINK]
