Iwaki city opened Yotsukura swimming beach / 3,200 Bq/kg from sand

Iwaki city Fukushima opens two swimming beaches from 7/15/2013 to 8/18/2013.

Yotsukura swimming beach is newly open this year. It was closed due to 311 effect last year.

However they were measuring high level of Cs-134/137 from the sand in Yotsukura swimming beach according to Iwaki city.

The municipal government outsourced the analysis for nonprofit organization Iwaki environment lab.

The organization took sand samples at 6 locations this January and March.

The highest reading was 3,167 Bq/Kg (Cs-134/137) in dry sand. The lowest reading was 47.3 Bq/Kg (Cs-134/137) in dry sand.

They concluded in the land side, the deeper it goes, the higher radiation level becomes. On the other hand, in the sea side, the radiation level is higher on the surface.

It may suggest that Cesium-134/137 is sinking in the land side but in sea side, radioactive material keeps being washed off and newly accumulated on the surface by seawater.

In the opening ceremony of the swimming beach, the municipal government held the Shinto religious services to pray for the safety and also made a “sand park”, where children can play with the sand for the special amusement of this year.

La ville d’ Iwaki de Fukushima ouvre deux plages à la baignade du 15 juillet au 18 août 2013.

La plage de Yotsukura a été ouverte récemment cette année. Elle a été fermée l’an dernier à cause des conséquences du 11-3.
Ils ont pourtant relevé de hauts niveaux de césium 134/137 dans le sable de la plage de Yotsukura selon la ville d’Iwaki.
La municipalité a sous-traité les analyses à une association à but non lucratif de surveillance de l’environnement.
L’organisation a pris des échantillons de sable en 6 endroits en janvier et en mars.
Le record était de 3 167 Bq/kg (Cs-134/137) dans du sable sec. Le plus bas était à 47,3 Bq/kg (Cs-134/137) dans le sable sec aussi.
Ils se sont arrêtés côté terre, plus on la creuse, plus la radioactivité est forte. En face, côté mer, la radioactivité est plus forte en surface.
Ça laisse penser que le césium 134/137 s’enfonce dans le sol mais que côté mer les matières radioactives sont lessivées et les nouvelles accumulations se font en surface via l’eau de mer.
Au cours de la cérémonie d’ouverture de la plage, la municipalité a fait appel aux services religieux Shinto pour prier pour la sécurité et a aussi présenté un “parc à sable” où les enfants peuvent jouer avec le sable en tant qu’amusement spécial pour cette année.

Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
