4,200,000,000Bq of β and 10,000,000 Bq of γ nuclides leaked from ALPS again / New technology never get into operation

Extremely high level of radiation leaked from multiple nuclide removing system ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System).

This system has been continuously in the serious trouble since they started the hot test last Spring. However, Tepco doesn’t change their plan to try to purify 1,960 m3 / day of contaminated water from this Summer.

ALPS is practically considered to be one of a few national projects on contaminated water issue. Tepco’s president Hirose promised Japanese Prime Minister Abe to complete purifying all the contaminated water by the end of March in 2015.

The current contaminated water volume is approx. 450,000 m3. ALPS is required to be in the full operation in one of these months.

Around 0:19 of 4/16/2014, Fukushima worker found the contaminated water and absorption material overflowed from a part of the system. The leaking volume was 1.1 m3 as Tepco claims. The total volume of leaked β nuclides was 4.2 Billion Bq, the one of γ nuclides was 10 Million Bq.

The overflowed water spread over 6m × 6m × 3cm. Even the cause hasn’t been verified.

Estimated radiation doses of Fukushima returnees withheld for half a year

April 16, 2014, THE ASAHI SHIMBUN, http ajw asahi com/ (article/0311disaster/fukushima/AJ201404160056) – http English kyodonews jp/ (news/2014/04/285470) html

Japan withheld findings on estimated radiation exposure for Fukushima returnees for six months, even though levels exceeded the long-term target of 1 millisievert a year at more than half of surveyed locations. Individual radiation doses were estimated to be beyond 1 millisievert per year, or 0.23 microsievert an hour, at 24 of all the 43 surveyed sites, including ones in the Miyakoji district in Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture, The Asahi Shimbun learned April 15.

The revelation comes just two weeks after the central government lifted the evacuation order for the district on April 1.

LOS ANGELES – Twenty-eight years after its Chernobyl nuclear plant exploded, Ukraine confronts a nuclear specter of a different kind: the possibility that the country’s reactors could become military targets in the event of a Russian invasion. Speaking at the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague in March, Andrii Deshchytsia, Ukraine’s acting foreign minister, cited the “potential threat to many nuclear facilities” should events deteriorate into open warfare.

  3. Crews find suspected area of WIPP radiation leak

By Associated Press Published: Thursday, April 17, 2014, 9:18 pm – http krqe com/ (2014/04/17/crews-find-suspected-area-of-wipp-radiation-leak/)

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) – Two months after radiation leaked from the federal government’s half-mile deep nuclear waste dump in southeastern New Mexico, officials said Thursday that crews have found contamination underground in the area where waste was most recently being stored. Crews on their fourth trip into the mine on Wednesday made it into the only active waste storage area and found contamination, Reynolds said. The deeper they went into the area, the more widespread the contamination, she said.

But the crews had to retreat before identifying the possible source because they had been underground for five hours in protective gear that retains heat and the batteries on their respiratory equipment were running low.

Tammy Reynolds, the U.S. Department of Energy’s deputy recovery manager, told a community meeting in Carlsbad that more trips need to be made into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant to further investigate the accident, but officials hope to have more information next week. Waste at the plant is stored in panels, which are a series of rooms cut out of underground salt beds. Five of those panels are full and have already been sealed. Panel 6 is full but has not yet been sealed. Panel 7 is the current active storage area. Crews made it to both Panels 6 and 7, and they found the contamination in Panel 7, Reynolds said.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
