Contaminated water crisis

[Collapsed groundwater bypass plan] Tritium detected in all of the 8 groundwater samples

Tepco is planning to lessen the contaminated water volume to stock by bypassing groundwater to discharge it to the Pacific.

However radioactive water Tritium was detected in all of the samples that were taken from 8 borings on 10/8/2013. There are 4 more groundwater bypass wells. Those samples are still under analysis.

The groundwater bypass wells are downstream of the tank that experienced 300m3 leakage.

 

In this analysis, the highest reading was 730,000 Bq/m3. Tritium will not be filtered out to discharge to the Pacific.

Tepco prévoit de diminuer le volume des eaux extrêmement radioactives à stocker en dérivant les eaux souterraines directement dans le Pacifique avant qu’elles aient atteint les réacteurs.

Néanmoins, du tritium radioactif a été relevé dans tous les échantillons pris des 8 forages le 8 octobre 2013. Il reste 4 autres puits de forage de dérivation dont les échantillons sont toujours en cours d’analyse.
Les puits de dérivation des eaux souterraines sont en aval de la citerne qui a laissé partir les 300 m³.

Dans cette analyse, le record est à 730 000 Bq/m³. Le tritium ne sera pas filtré avant que ce soit déversé dans le Pacifique.

  1. I don’t understand, are you saying that they openly admit to release contaminated water into Pacific?

    1. Why not?

      Canada, et al, get away with “dumping” “Tritium Unlimited”.

      If this is standard practice in Canada, why would it be any different elsewhere?

      Is that not maddening?

      I know that tritium cannot be filtered out by standard means.
      This does not mean that it cannot be seperated.
      It is simply energy-intensive and therefore expensive.

      Saying otherwise would be a lie.

    2. In addition to tritium, strontium will likely be another constituent.

  2. Tritium cannot be removed from large quantities of water by ANY remotely feasible available technology, that I am aware of.

    All the other radionuclides can be filtered out, leaving only the tritium, which has a 12 year half-life. I have repeatedly suggested that the tritiated water CAN BE safely and responsibly stored in thick, multiwall, stainless steel containers, in an undersea tank farm.

    This technical option, treaty interpretations notwithstanding is THE BEST available solution. In about 50 years, the tritium will have halflifed away. The international radiation treaties have proven to be fatally flawed and internally inconsistent.

    The BEST AVAILABLE solution is much superior to continuing to pollute the open ocean.

    1. Electrolysis.

      One could get off their duff and look up tritium production during WWII.

      It’s old technology.

      When you boil your kettle, the bottom portion (after standing for some time to settle)
      will contain a higher concentration of tritiated and heavy water.

      The problem is that it is an energy-intesive process.
      Would it not be ironic if the nuke-puke were ultimately conscripted to clean up some of the nuke-puke?

      “What is causing tritium and radioactive oxygen production?” would be a good question to ask, neh?

  3. My money is on them just diluting contamniated water until they reach a Bq/m^3 level that is deemed to be accectable to discharge into the Ocean.

    All the water is going into the Pacific, that is the only realistic option. Enough of the water will be filtered to allow them to say that they tried.

    As in one of the other items today – their answer to C-137 being found 1Km from the plant was that the level was not dangerous, it was lower than WHO limit on drinking water.

    Tepco says the plants are in ‘cold shutdown’, they can not freeze 10 meters of their ice wall, and they have yet to mention what they are going to replace the bolted tanks which will not last 5 years according to their own data. Abe says the Government is in charge, silt fences keep radiation from spreading, and has 2020 vision 7 years into the future.

    Tepco and Abe are making their own reality, there is no reason to expect the reasonable course of action is the one that will be taken.

    1. There is no ‘cold-shutdown’, in the pre-Fukushima sense of the term.

      Steam has been generated and photographed in the vicinity of FDU-3, on cool, low-humidity days.

      The fuel is ex-reactor and ex-vessel for FDU-1, FDU-2 & FDU-3 and corium trails have been photographed entering the earth (ex-containment & ex-foundation).

      The reactor, metal shell, torus and concrete containment for FDU-3 are missing in the salvage photos.

      FDU-3 Fuel was scattered over a 30 [km] radius, containing such exotics as Pu-238 (Rocket Fuel) and, according to Yuki N. Karakawa, of the Karakawa Foundation, Europium (isotope not given).

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
