Radioactive debris of Fukushima nuclear plant to start overflowing the storage by 2015, Tepco has no detailed plan

According to Tepco, they are going to run out of the storage for highly radioactive debris in Fukushima nuclear plant by 2015.

Currently the volume of debris produced from decommissioning Fukushima nuclear plant is 199,000 tones. 176,000 tones of debris will be newly added by 2015. Generally, 90% of the storage capacity will be full. However, some of the storages will be over 100% depending on the contamination level.

The volume of debris of 0.1 ~ 1mSv/h will be up to 21,000 tones, where the storage capacity is 20,000 tones.

Also, the volume of debris of 1 ~ 30 mSv/h will be up to 33,000 tones, where the storage capacity is 34,000 tones.

At this moment, Tepco has no detailed plan. They haven’t made the detailed estimate of the potential increase of debris either.

On 5/17/2013, Tepco submitted this report to Nuclear Regulation Authority, but it is not published on their website.

Les quantités de gravas radioactifs de la centrale nucléaire de Fukushima vont déborder la capacité de stockage courant 2015, Tepco n’a pas de plan de gestion détaillé


Selon Tepco, à la centrale nucléaire de Fukushima ils vont manquer d’espace de stockage pour les gravas extrêmement radioactifs à partir de 2015.

Le volume de gravas produits par le démantèlement de la centrale de Fukushima est actuellement de 199 000 tonnes. A l’horizon 2015, 176 000 tonnes de gravas s’y seront ajoutées. En gros, 90 % de l’espace de stockage seront atteints.  En fonction du niveau de contamination, certains des espaces de stockage vont cependant dépasser les 100%.
Le volume de gravas entre 0,1 et 1 mSv/h vont atteindre les 21 000 tonnes, alors que leur capacité de stockage est de 20 000.
En outre, le volume de gravas entre 1 et 30 mSv/h va atteindre les 33 000 tonnes, alors que la capacité en est de 34 000.
Pour le moment, Tepco n’a pas de plan particulier. Ils n’ont pas non plus fait d’estimation détaillée de l’augmentation des gravas.
Le 17 mai 2013, Tepco a soumis ce rapport à la NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) mais ils ne l’ont pas publié sur leur site web.

I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
