  1. Japan rate of thyroid cancer was less than one in a million…
essentially ZERO for every 100,000 people.

then it was 58 of 236K… essentially 22.5/100,000

for those who can read the report… how many cases total relative to 75 cases?

    1. Impressive, but your logic has slight flaw
See numbers can be presented in ways to support
      whatever it is your supporting.

      The 75,
that you can’t seem to find
      are people
      there not statistics.

To be honest, if Diachii caused only 1
Malignant and possible malignant thyroid tumor of Fukushima children

and that one was my child
I would have to tell you to stuff your stats

      What is your point
how safe nuke power meltdowns are?

      1. The point surely is that even by the standards of cold, impersonal statistics there has been a massive increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer, which cannot be explained as a random variation. If Daiichi caused only one malignant tumour it would be impossible to prove the connection, however convinced one might be personally. Epidemiology is inherently dependent on statistics. Those who seek to downplay the risks of radiation are fond of dismissing ‘emotional’ arguments but they can’t dismiss the statistical facts.

        1. You need to consider the standard deviation. If the yearly number of cases goes up or down by, for example, 20, then this result could indicate that NO new cases of cancer were generated as a result of the meltdowns. So be aware of how statistics can be manipulated by sensationalist blogs like this one (author generates his living by reporting on how bad fukushima is) and his tinfoil hat crazy friend Bill Duff.

          1. If the juvenile thyroid cancer rate in Fukushima province were similar to the rest of Japan one would expect to see about two new cases per year on average. If the distribution were normal or log-normal the chances of seeing 20 new cases in any given year, let alone in consecutive years, would be vanishingly small.

            1. The Power of the Study (Cohort Size)

In a statistical analysis with a STRENGTH based on a cohort of over 10^5 participants.

The numbers are going to be correct (Dead Spot On). With the basic public health mathematics dating back to Carl Friedrich Gauss.

              Martin,

You are in a ‘pissing contest with a skunk’, and the skunk likes it. Attributed to Lyndon Baines Johnson.

              1. Let’s see if D. Niall can suggest a plausible, non-negative statistical distribution with mean 2 and p(75) greater than, say, 0.0001. I’m still waiting for Niall to disclose their sources of ‘serious information’ about the Fukushima plant.

        2. Every Dime:

Just Take the medical costs and personal damages; out of the HIDE of the: TEPCO executive staff, board members, lenders and other members of ‘Team Nuke’. “Liable to the last button on their shirts”, as Lloyds of London famously described it.

Then BOIL them in a cauldron, traditional/historical Japan style.

The Epidemiological mathematics are ‘cut, dried and trivial’

          Sincerely,

          Bill Duff

    2. Just the Beginning,

The first few Thyroid Cancers are sentinel events. They herald many more Thyroid Cancers to come.

Similarly the fetal demise numbers, polydactilism (six toes-fingers) and congenital hypothyroid births, presage all manner of looming birth defects, congenital and hereditary maladies.

Also, many of these abnormalities are hidden within elective abortion statistics and lower birth rates.

The Leukemia Cases will begin in the next couple of years.

      The Tip of the Iceberg

The canary in the coal mine

There is much sorrow, disease, suffering ahead for the Nipponese. And the circle is widening as the radioactive contamination plumes follow the ocean currents.

      Sincerely,

      Bill Duff

        1. Niall in Sweden,

          Blow me!

Your wish is NOT, my command.

          Screw Off!

Matters of some general interest to the readers are considered. Troll talk is ALWAYS BULLSHIT.

Oh, did I say … Blow Me!

      1. Just the beginning of radiation diseases, lies and coverups

http www japantimes co jp/ (news/2014/02/07/national/eight-more-fukushima-kids-found-with-thyroid-cancer-disaster-link-denied) – National JIJI Feb 7, 2014 — Eight more Fukushima kids found with thyroid cancer

FUKUSHIMA – Eight more Fukushima children have been confirmed as having thyroid gland cancer following the prefecture’s checkups, a local panel of experts said Friday, ruling out any link to the Tepco triple-meltdown calamity. The prefecture began the checkups in 2011 due to the nuclear disaster at Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima No. 1 power station. Those subject to the measure were 18 or under at that time.

The panel said 75 people were suspected of having thyroid gland cancer as of the end of last year, of whom 33 were confirmed as having the disease. Three months before, the number of confirmed patients stood at 25.

        about 270,000 have been examined.

  2. The total ‘eligible for test’ is 375,000 children? They have ‘tested ‘ 270,000..where are the other 100,000+ which have NOT been tested..??? Scary to read the numbers..huge increase in ‘sentinal’ cases..from less than zero per 100,000 to over 22 per 100,000…with over 100,000 cases not reported on…bad feeling about this..

    1. Thyroid abnormalities and PRE-cancerous lesions have been identified in a VAST number of Fukushima children.

These Fukushima Thyroid Cancer cases have progressed to cancer/neoplasm, MUCH FASTER than the corresponding patients in the Chernobyl nuclear Disaster.

There are certainly a number of ‘Team Nuke’ liars who are hissing, screaming, and drum-beating … LOTS of diversionary statements.

The SIMPLE FACT IS … Northern Honshu Island is entering a radiation fallout induced Cancer Pandemic. The ‘Merchants of Death’ who have profited by bringing this grim reality into being; should be brought to ‘Harsh Justice’.

      Sincerely,

      Bill Duff

  3. A few factors to remember…
    – about 46% of the 278000 tested had ‘abnormalities’, thyroid cancer doesn’t happen overnight.
    – the Iodine131 didn’t just reach the border of Fukushima-ken and stop. Tochigi, Gumma, Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa all got doses, but there has been no effort to test any of these children
    – it is not only children under 18 yrs that are effected, the whole exposed population is susceptible.
    – Thyroid cancer is most probably the effect of Iodine131. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is still the looming ill-effects of Cesium132/137. There is still the ill-effects of Strontium90. And the pieces of Plutonium blasted around the prefecture?
    – the Japanese governments efforts to burn and dump radioactive debris as far away as Osaka and Kitakyushu will destroy all the evidence, as medical opinion works on ‘clusters’, so it would be easy to say “well, although it is extremely high, it is high in other places too…um, it must be from North Korean bomb tests”…
-I wouldn’t trust “Dr” Yamasata(Fukushima Medical University) as far as I could throw him(“smiling is the best defence against ionizing radionuclides”). Japanese government, well just listen to Abe’s Olympic speech…TEPCO, since when is a greedy electricity provider an expert on childhood cancer?
    – statistics? Well I live in Japan and I have been to several hospitals to try and have any sort of background radiation body check, so I can compare now and later results to understand if I am being effected by my environment. Impossible. Even though there is an ongoing nuclear disaster, which experts say is worse than Chenobyl, citizens have no access to testing.

    1. Cesium-134

Cesium-134 is The DEFINING Fukushima radioisotope.

There is a LOT of Cesium-137 lingering from Chernobyl and atmospheric testing. The SIGNATURE Fukushima Fallout is Cesium-134.

Cesium-134 is approximately 15X the health hazard, gram for gram, more than Cesium-137.

      Sincerely,

      Bill Duff

      1. “Cesium-134 is approximately 15X the health hazard, gram for gram, more than Cesium-137.”

And exactly the same hazard Becquerel for Becquerel.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
