[Shift from nuclear] Ambassador to Japan, Kennedy visited Fukushima / Offshore wind farm IS the symbol of restoration

Caroline Kennedy, American ambassador to Japan stated that offshore wind farm in Fukushima is the symbol of restoration.

She visited the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant on 5/14/2014, and visited Fukushima FORWARD (Fukushima floating offshore wind farm demonstration project) on 5/15/2014. Fukushima FORWARD is the project to establish the business-model of the floating wind farm funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

She described it as a new chance after 311, it wouldn’t only produce new employments and industry but also the trade chance with the United States of America.

It sounds like that a part of American government is expecting Japan to be mature enough to shift away from nuclear policy.

  1. Mr Bill Duff, are you paid to discredit wind power too, or is it just team nuke and nuclear fission?

      1. Hydro Electric power is reliable, clean, efficient, and affordable.

There are significant opportunities globally for conventional hydro-electric power. There are even more opportunities for mini-hydro and micro-hydro AC electrical generation plants.

Natural Gas, Propane, Oil and Coal are reliable, efficient, abundant and economic. Natural gas is inherently clean; whereas coal requires some effort and expense to achieve various arbitrary levels of clean and green. Bitumen (TAR) is significantly more expensive than the above; and is roughly as dirty as coal.

        Those are the ENGINEERING facts.

          1. Team antinuke employ LIARS, to spread their propaganda. Cheap liars, judging by the poor quality of this one.

          2. High Praise for Hydro-Electric Power

I praised a non-fossil fuel, which is: proven, efficient, reliable, and an environmentally beneficial source of AC Electrical power.

Niall is an increasingly frantic fool.

          3. Hydro Electric power is reliable, clean, efficient, and affordable.

It is a simple and TRUE statement.

The Hoover Dam is an excellent example.

We need more hydro-electrical power generation.

Hydro-Electric is NOT a fossil fuel.

            1. Tell that to the Banqiao victims. Hydro power which killed more than Chernobyl.

              1. Safety

It is NOT safe to build your home in a flood zone, or directly beneath a dam. The least secure dams are earthen or rolled earth type. High seismic zone location increases the risk of catastrophic dam collapse.

Only those dams located directly above a civilian nuclear power plant have the potential to destroy a region and contaminate a hemisphere with nuclear fallout.

Several earthen dams are directly above civilian nuclear power stations in the USA. Omaha Nebraska, which has several upstream dams, springs to mind. A cascade failure would ensue, should the upper dam breech.

Looming nuclear disasters, in the heartland of America

                1. So hydro power is dsngerous only if you live in the flood zone? well, by that logic, if no one lived next to nuclear plants then they’d be completely safe.

                2. Land beneath dam elevations would have better purpose as agricultural rather than residential, it seems.
Of course, where do they tend to pack people in residentially?
Well, the cheapest land is the most affordable, so most financially-challenged people tend to go for the cheapest land. Land may be inexpensive due to zoning, pollution &/or environmental regulation, low elevation/flood &/or earthquake & other regrettables/assets risk, civil utilities, etc.
An earthquake can feel two degrees of magnitude greater in an alluvial plain, compared to on bedrock.

        1. Quote: ” Bitumen (TAR) is significantly more expensive than the above; and is roughly as dirty as coal. ”

That therefore includes NORM and other toxic heavy metals, such as mercury. Wonder what NORM (& uNORM) ends up in some methane streams {et al}.

Of course, we don’t count any solvents used to dilute that dirty bitumen for horizontal acceleration via pipe & pressure.

          1. How many barrels of oil (& the legion of barrels of water) does it take to extract a single barrel of bitumen? Bitch, you men!

    1. Hydro Electric power is reliable, clean, efficient, and affordable.

The Hoover Dam is an excellent example.

We need more hydro-electrical power generation.

Hydro-Electric is NOT a fossil fuel.

      1. BC Hydro is in process of evacuating land in the interior for the new Site C dam. How do the locals think about that, i wonder?

  2. It is a component of Engineering Ethics to inform the public of technical issues.

The pluses and minuses of each technology, ARE, what they are.

Speaking over the lying hucksters, is a public service.

The shills, trolls, plants and other LIARS, do not like it.

And they cry, gripe and whine … a lot.

    1. I speak over lying hucksters. Lying hucksters who go on about Giant Radionuclide Storms of 2011, the death toll of 20000 in the US, nuclear explosions in FDU-3, false personas, and so on. Sounds familiar? You are paid to be a lying huckster Mr Bill Duff and alter identities.

      1. It is quite apparent ‘Who is getting paid’.

During the past four decades, nine of Japan’s top utility companies spent a combined 2.4 trillion yen (US$27.6 billion) to purchase media advertising to promote nuclear power, according to an investigation by the national bilingual newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

        http www cpj org/ (blog/2014/04/journalists-in-japan-face-threats-3-years-after-fu) php#more

$27.6B is a lot of propaganda money for Japan’s 55 nuclear reactors.

What is the TOTAL for the ~100 USA civilian nuclear reactors?

  3. Wind is intermittent. Thus wind is suitable for applications which are interruptible.

Windmills work well for filling stock tanks in arid regions. Wind power is not well suited to AC electrical power generation.

Wind power is reasonably well suited to charging batteries, as is solar-voltaic.

Wind and solar are NOT suitable for any ‘on demand’ application.

Carolyn Kennedy is NOT an engineer; and probably doesn’t know any better, at this point. If she still says that sort of thing in 3 years, she will be a liar. Now she is merely reading a script.

    Inherent Limitations

    1. Wind and solar seem more appropriate to suppliment and eventually replace AC lighting at least. Solar heating is one tech that you never see in any solar electric output estimate.

Perhaps it is a “fart in a windstorm”, yet you can actually burn farts for some useful output. :lol

Also, is it not more difficult for homeowners to sell power back to utilities due to the new built-in “one-way” usage accumulator within those stupid so-called “smart-meters” (or should i call them “SMART meters”?) Such things remind me of the “greatest” man-in-the-middle attack known as Orson Welles’ “War of the Worlds” broadcast as described by one Travis Goodspeed (along with his demonstration of why trusting wireless keyboards may not always be a good thing).

Quote: “As the title suggests, Orson Welles authored and implemented the attack in 1938 as a form of social engineering”
      . quoted from: http ://travisgoodspeed.blogspot.ca/2011/09/remotely-exploiting-phy-layer.html

. wirless keyboard referenced article: http ://travisgoodspeed.blogspot.ca/2011_09_01_archive.html

      1. Ah; that should read “Wind and solar seem more appropriate to suppliment and eventually replace AC lighting at least (except north of the Arctic Circle).”
Something about having to keep those batteries at a minimum temperature of say 5 degrees Centigrade makes storing six months of lighting power for the next six-month “night” simply stupid.

  4. “Output can be leveled to a great extent by locating many wind turbines in a large area. If insufficient electricity is generated by wind power, other sources such as thermal or hydroelectric power generation can make up for the shortfall.”

    – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

    www mhi-global.com/discover/earth/technology/wind_power.html

    1. Engineering translation into the English language.

The Wind Turbines are useless; and require 100% backup with ‘hard’ electrical power sources.

      Using Engineering lingo:

Wind is 180 Degrees out of phase with electrical power demand.

      1. Actually, i thought i saw an article recently touting that Germany was using up to 75% of their total power output via wind and solar. Perhaps they properly accounted for solar heat generation, which is often missing alongside solar electrical output estimates.

Germany seems to be leading, though recent events remind us that even with a nuke-free Germany, she is still vulnerable to other country’s “nuke-puke”.

        1. Ah; that should read “solar and other heat generation”.
To err is human. To forgive – humane.
To completely “fuck-up” like inEPTCO & subsidiaries – honor must be satisfied by blade. In this case, truth is the “edged weapon” honor first demands. Drive it deep.

          1. Dont argue with shills and idiots. Paid LIARS. Team ANTINUKE uses LIARS to spread their propaganda.

            1. I thought you said they “employ” them? Oh yeah, you did.
So, it is just the “nukular” pimps that employ paid shilssuchasyerself.

  5. Allow me to‘do a Bill’! …

“Wind energy has had one of the most substantial growths of any source of power generation. In many areas throughout the world, wind power is supplying up to 20% of total energy demand…

“The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), along with partners from the Electric Power Research Institute and University of Colorado and collaboration from a large international industry stakeholder group, embarked on a comprehensive study to understand the ways in which wind power technology can assist the power system by providing control of its active power output being injected onto the grid. The study includes a number of different power system simulations, control simulations, and actual field tests using turbines at NREL’s National Wind Technology Center…

“The studies detailed in this report have shown tremendous promise for the potential for wind power plants to provide APC [active power control]. Careful consideration of these responses will improve power system reliability…With all these benefits that may result from careful engineering analysis, there should be no reason that wind power plants cannot provide APC to help support the grid, and help wind power forever abandon its classification as a “non-dispatchable” resource.”

  6. UK: Windmills flap helplessly as coal remains king

    The Times ^ | 2/18/2009 | Carl Mortished

Posted on 2/19/2009, 1:07:29 AM by bruinbirdman

If you flick a switch today, the light goes on because of coal. Almost half the power generated in Britain on Tuesday came from coal and a bit more than a third from natural gas. Nuclear power stations were contributing 17 per cent and windmills provided 0.6 per cent.

It’s a day’s work in the power industry and it is 16 years since the Kyoto conference on climate change, when this country signed up to a process that would seek to avert global warming by weaning the world off the combustion of oil, gas and coal. Since then we have had two Energy White Papers, one Energy Review, the launch of European carbon trading, the decline of North Sea gas, the promotion of wind farms and the eleventh-hour rescue of Britain’s nuclear industry. After all the politics, we are breathless as our bright new whirligigs stand motionless on a beach horizon.

The wind has failed, as it does during periods of intense heat and cold, and although we have built, with enormous subsidy, enough wind turbines to generate 5 per cent of our electricity, no more than 1 per cent is operational when we need it. Like Coleridge’s ancient mariner, the nation is becalmed, a painted ship on a painted ocean and we have gone back a century, hewing the same coal that first put Britain on the fast track to the Industrial Revolution.

The reason why we are still stuffing black lumps of carbon into furnaces is simple: it makes economic sense and the financial markets are shouting this message louder than ever before.

Everyone loves to hate financial markets — casinos operated by spivs, jungles filled with rapacious speculators — but they provide warnings when things are about to go wrong and the carbon market is no exception.

      1. The London Times is the original source, as is the prose.

Niall is apparently calling the London Times out, but without any form of substantiation.

        1. I dont know about the times, but i do know that you are paid to dig up articles and post them on blogs, so im calling you out on tat you dishonest lying moron. Thats why you never have anything on topic to say, just posting more articles and quotes. got no mind of your own bill? just doing your shift and quitting at quitting time?

          1. It is evident, ‘Who gets paid’.

During the past four decades, nine of Japan’s top utility companies spent a combined 2.4 trillion yen (US$27.6 billion) to purchase media advertising to promote nuclear power, according to an investigation by the national bilingual newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

What is the propaganda budget for ~100 USA civilian nuclear reactors?

    1. Coal and the Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) contained within make me shake my head why it is still used and why antinuke doesn’t seem to remind people of how much Uranium is actually in it. Not to mention other non-radioactive toxic metals such as Mercury.

Yet we are blind as to how much of this crap wafts over the Pacific from the Oriental mainland, and bioaccumulates here.

This lack of monitoring makes me nervous for antiproliferation reasons too; you?

  7. Reality

The ‘Blow Hard Wind Farm’ can provide power for X homes; 25% of the time, on a random basis.

Electrical Engineering Limitations of Wind Generation

    1. It is obvious that wind power is only part of the solution to energy independence. Isn’t solar a better way to boil water?

  8. The wind is NOT always blowing somewhere. Thus, even with wide-spread wind farms, wind power is STILL undependable. Figure 1 shows the total output for wind farms in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia for June 2009. http bravenewclimate files wordpress com/ (2009/08/langfig0.jpg?w=660)

The conclusion: wind power is unreliable, not dispatchable, and often zero when needed, no matter how large the area over which the wind farms are distributed.

Peter Lang is a retired geologist and engineer with 40 years experience on a wide range of energy projects throughout the world, including managing energy R&D and providing policy advice for government and opposition. His experience includes: coal, oil, gas, hydro, geothermal, nuclear power plants, nuclear waste disposal, and a wide range of energy end use management projects. http bravenewclimate com/ (?s=peter+lang)

    1. Solar doesn’t seem a great option for Alaska.
Geothermal and hydrologic energy are available.

Wind will have it’s niche. I wonder what they use to power earthquake sensor packages in the extreme lattitudes. (I wonder how they keep the batteries warm, too)

  9. Local Electricity Prices VARY over time. Physical reality and inherent engineering limitations persist. 4X is a lot of money.

    CO2 Avoidance Cost

For wind power to be viable the price for electricity would need to be about $120/MWh. The current average wholesale price of electricity is about $30/MWh3. So wind energy must be subsidised by about $90/MWh. If we have a carbon price of $25/MWh then the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) need to reach $65/MWh to make wind viable. (That means the consumer must subsidise wind by $90/MWh, or three times the current wholesale price of electricity.).

    http bravenewclimate com/ (2011/05/21/co2-avoidance-cost-wind/)

CO2 avoidance cost with wind energy in Australia and carbon price implications

      1. Nescient Comments

Two links to a qualified electrical engineer have been provided. He is writing, in the public realm, about subjects within his area of expertise.

Nescient, which describes Niall, and possibly describes Ambassador Carolyn Kennedy, is defined as ‘without science’. Nescient describes a person that is both Ignorant and Stupid. Niall is clearly Nescient and a LIAR. Caroline Kennedy may be charitably given the benefit of the doubt.

The Ambassador is merely ignorant. She is not necessarily stupid or LYING. If she persists in such public announcements, at some point she will become INDIVIDUALLY and PERSONALLY responsible. So politicians, elected or appointed, may gradually become culpable and reprehensible. We should certainly hope that Ambassador Kennedy ‘cleans up her act’ in the near future. She bears SOME responsibility for the DRACONIAN Japanese National Security Act. She similarly bears a tiny degree of responsibility for her somewhat uninformed statements regarding wind power. That percentage of responsibility increases with time.

        Sincerely,

        Bill Duff

  10. Reduced reliance on the AC electrical grid is desirable for reasons of: efficiency, reliability, cost, disaster resistance, balance of payments, and national security, as well as environmental considerations. Unfortunately, due to systemic government corruption, such technology is scarcely available in the USA.

For example, natural gas engine-driven vapor compression heat pumps are available in most of the world, EXCLUDING the USA. For example, in Japan, Aisin produces such equipment for residential consumer applications.

    http www aisin com/ (product/energy/)
http www aisin co jp/ (ghp/english/)

The USA has inexpensive availability of natural gas in vast quantities. Unfortunately, the USA has become a highly corrupt nation. This corruption greatly increases the USA cost of living; and severely limits economic opportunities. USA homeowners would benefit greatly by availability of Aisin products.

      1. Point of Use Energy Conversion

Apparently Niall is calling Aisin OUT, on some matter of their advertised product line. Aisin engine-driven vapor compression heat pumps are advertised, sold and installed globally.

Point of Use energy conversion, such as engine-driven heat pumps, are a highly efficient process. The energy efficiency is dramatically higher than AC electrical power traveling large distances over the grid. The energy efficiency of such devices is higher still; when the waste heat is used to heat water for a home, hot-tub and/or swimming pool.

It is often difficult to determine what Niall is screaming about. Many of the Niall rants and curses do not appear to relate to identifiable specifics. Niall sometimes appears to suffer from a sort of keyboard Tourette’s Syndrome.

        Uncontrolled fury

          1. I’ve also stopped reading what you write. I’m just going to reply with generic warnings to others from now on. Eventually your employer will realise no one is fooled by your lies and halftruths anymore and then you’ll be fired and post no longer

            1. Que le hace

Niall has such low levels of reading comprehension and retention, it makes little difference to his comments; whether he reads or not.

              Imperceptible distinction without a difference

Bill Duff works for a poluting fossel fuel company and is paid to manipulate public opinion and spread propaganda, to distort the truth and to lie so his company gains market share in te energy sector. He is also frequently rude and abusive.

Opposition to the proposal from Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who died in August, had been a major thorn in the Obama administration’s side in advancing the project.

The Cape Wind farm would lie about 5.2 miles from the nearest shore, on the mainland, and about 13.8 miles from Nantucket Island. The tip of the highest blade of each turbine would reach 440 feet above the water.

The long-running struggle over the project underscores how divisive even a “clean” energy project can be in the United States.

Friends and foes have squared off over the impact it would have on nature, local traditions, property values and electricity bills; on the profits to be pocketed by a private developer; and even the urgency of easing the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels, a priority of the Obama administration.

Commercial interests also influence reporting on nuclear issues. During the past four decades, nine of Japan’s top utility companies spent a combined 2.4 trillion yen (US$27.6 billion) to purchase media advertising to promote nuclear power, according to an investigation by the national bilingual newspaper Asahi Shimbun. Utility companies remain one of the top sources of advertising income for mainstream media, according to reports. In one case described by the Center for Public Integrity, electric companies forced an undisclosed television station to cut off an interview with nuclear skeptic Taro Kono by threatening to withdraw their advertising.

Michael Penn, chair of the Freedom of the Press Committee of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, said some freelancers reporting on Fukushima face legal repercussions. “It seems that companies have chosen to go after individual reporters instead of the media organizations they work for, perhaps in order to intimidate them and send a message to other journalists,” he told CPJ. Penn was referring to a libel suit that one of Japan’s most powerful nuclear industry figures brought against freelance journalist Minoru Tanaka in 2012 in connection with his investigative reporting on the nuclear energy industry.

In January of this year, freelance journalist Mari Takenouchi was interrogated by police after she criticized a project by the pro-nuclear organization Ethos for encouraging people to live in areas she believed were contaminated with radioactivity. The NGO responded by making a “criminal contempt” claim against her, according to blog posts and news reports. http antinuclearinfo files wordpress com (/2014/05/takenouchi-mari) gif

Jane Barraclough, Date: December 6, 2011 http www smh com au/ (world/escape-to-okinawa-20111205-1ofh3) html

Minaho Kubota is another parent who decided to seek refuge on the island. She says her life in Japan changed course the moment she heard news of the disaster. Until then, the mother of two had never even heard of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Her seven-year-old son, Daito, was playing outside when she turned on the the radio and heard about a series of nuclear explosions 190 kilometres north of her house in Mito City in Ibaraki Prefecture. “I just cried,” she says. “Then Daito developed a rash on his neck.”

Four weeks later, when she was already considering leaving Japan, Kubota’s baby son got his first-ever blood nose. “I decided to move as far away as possible within Japan, but it took two months to convince my husband it was a good idea. “He thought there was no point worrying so much if there was nothing we could do about it.” Like many of Kubota’s neighbours and friends who treated Fukushima as a “taboo” subject, her husband did not like to talk about radiation.

Kubota told teachers at her son’s school not to give him milk after batches with excessive amounts of caesium were recalled. The school ignored her requests. “In the end I made up a story that he was allergic and they finally stopped giving him the milk.” Kubota says she had “no choice” but to leave. I don’t want to wait and see if my kids are part of future statistics on the consequences of Fukushima.”

Meanwhile, several NGOs have linked some people’s health problems to fallout from Fukushima.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
