Sea contamination of 3946 days later

German media, Sueddeutsche reported the sea contamination simulation for 3946 days following after 311.

It’s the surface concentration relative to initial values of Japan. (Cs-137)

Unfortunately, I can not read German. If anyone can translate the original article, that’d be really helpful.

La contamination marine au bout de 3946 jours

Un média allemand, le Sueddeutsche, publie une simulation de la contamination marine au bout de 3946 jours après le 11-3.

Elle donne la concentration de surface relative aux valeurs initiales du Japon. (Cs-137)

Malheureusement, je ne connais pas l’allemand. Si quelqu’un pouvait traduire l’article original, ce me serait vraiment utile.

In two to three years are isotopes from Japan’s nuclear power plant havariertem appear on the coast of the United States.

Although the irradiated water is further diluted – though much more slowly than before, as the oceanic eddy in the eastern Pacific are much weaker than in the Kuroshio region. According to the researchers’ calculations, the radioactive activity is cesium-137 from the U.S. Coast have dropped to about ten to 20 becquerels per cubic meter. By comparison, Germany has a limit of 600 becquerels per kilogram of food – only for milk and baby food is a more stringent value.

  2. Nuclear disaster in Fukushima
The way/journey of the contaminated water
The meltdown at Fukushima has contaminated large amounts of radioactive seawater at Japan’s coast.
German scientists have calculated how it has spread in the Pacific and when it will reach the U.S. coast.

Because of the meltdown at the nuclear power plant Fukushima-1 in March 2011, large amounts of radioactive materials were released into the atmosphere and from the atmosphere into the Pacific Ocean, contaminated water was also fed directly into the sea. The consequences of long-term pollution to the marine organisms and to humans is still unclear.
After all, U.S. researchers have found in May 2012 that bluefin tuna at the coast of America were charged significantly more radioactive isotope of the element cesium than 2008 animals caught. The fish had obviously been previously living in front Japan’s coast. The exposure should not be to high that the affected animals should not be eaten.

How the radioactive contaminated water has spread from Japan so far and how it will be distributed within ten years, German scientists have studied. The researchers led by Claus Böning and Erik Behrens of Geomar/Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel have found that the concentration of the isotope – including durable seawater highly soluble cesium-137 – have been thinned very much, due to mixing with non-contaminated water .

“The amount of radioactivity that flew into the Pacific in March/April 2011 has been at least three times as large as the one that was registered in 1986 as a result of the Chernobyl disaster in the Baltic Sea”, said Boening.

It has been approximately ten terabecquerel (= ten “german” Billion Becquerel) – per cubic meter of water. “Nevertheless, we simulated that the radiation levels in the Pacific are already lower than the values that can be found today, 26 years after Chernobyl, in the Baltic Sea.”

The researchers have also carried out detailed computer simulations and declare themselves to placed great importance on their models in a realistic presentation. Therefore, they considered not only the main stream front the coast of Japan, the Kuroshio, but also variable vortex.

“According to our model calculations is likely due to this strong turbulence, the radioactive water had been distributed already has nearly half the North Pacific,” explains Behrens.

“In addition, winter storms have mixed the water to depths of around 500 meters.” For this reason, the concentration of the isotope is now only relatively low, as they report in the journal Environmental Research Letters.
The computer models indicate that branches of the contaminated water will reach in autumn 2013, the Hawaiian Islands and more prevalent in the east.
In two to three years, the isotope from Japan’s damaged nuclear power plant will appear at the coast of the United States.
While the irradiated water is further diluted – it will be much slower than before, since the oceanic vortex in the eastern Pacific are much weaker than in the Kuroshio region.
According to the researchers’ calculations, the activity of the radioactive cesium-137 in front the U.S. coast will be dropped to about ten to 20 becquerels per cubic meter.
By comparison, Germany has a limit of 600 becquerels per kilogram of food – only for milk and baby food is a stricter value.

  3. This simulation doesn’t take into account that the disaster is still ongoing, and storage tanks of contaminated water are filling quickly.

  4. Dear Iori,

the German article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung is about a scientific article of a few German scientists in a scientific journal – here is the link to this science article, it is in English, so you get the original information there:

Dear Iori, I want to somehow come into contact with you without having to go through google plus . I do not like these services. I want to send you a document as PDF but do not want to have it published in the internet now. Just for you to know about it. Maybe you can send me an email how to best do that.

    Best regards

    David Gruen.

  5. This model is worthless. It assumes, incorrectly, that the dumping of CS137 stopped right after the disaster, which it has not. TEPCO has no idea how much of anything is constantly being dumped in the sea through all the cracks and crevices in the plant, in the containments and from the corium it cannot positively locate from 1 or 2 or 3.

The release of radionuclieds has not ceased at Fukushima-Daichi. The disaster goes on and on and on, ad nauseum, as the world does nothing.

  6. Just yet another wakeup call about the ongoing dumping of radioactive wate into the Oceans of the World!

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
