Tepco started dismantling the cover of Reactor 1 on 10/22/2014.

The cover was installed in October of 2011 in order to stop radioactive material spreading supposedly.

To removed the molten fuel somewhere around the reactor, they need to remove 392 fuel assemblies in Spent Fuel Pool of Reactor 1 in advance, which is planned in 2017. However the spent fuel assemblies cannot be removed with the cover.

 

Currently they are to open approx. 50 holes on the top of cover to spray scattering inhibitor inside. However the main body of the cover cannot be removed until the end of February because there is no space around the reactor building due to the “frozen water wall” construction on-going.

The preceding “frozen water wall” failed. If this on-going “frozen water wall” construction is also delayed or failed, Reactor 1 fuel removal is going to be delayed as well.

Tepco a commencé le démantèlement du toit du réacteur 1 le  22 octobre 2014.

Cette couverture avait été installée en octobre 2011 pour soi-disant empêcher la dispersion des matières radioactives.
Pour retirer le combustible fondu en dehors du réacteur, ils doivent d’abord retirer les 392 assemblages de combustible de la piscine du réacteur, ce qui est prévu pour 2017. Néanmoins, on ne peut pas retirer ces assemblages avec le toit.

Actuellement, ils sont en train de forer environ 50 trous au sommet de la couverture pour disperser un produit empêchant la dispersion. Néanmoins, la structure principale de la couverture ne pourra pas être retirée avant fin février parce qu’il n’y a pas de place à côté du bâtiment du réacteur à cause de la construction en cours du “mur d’eau congelée”.
Le précédent “mur d’eau congelée” est un échec. Si celui-ci est retardé ou se révèle aussi être un échec alors le retrait des combustibles du réacteur 1 en sera retardé d’autant.

Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
