Tepco to “improve” the ground to stop groundwater contamination spreading by crushing an observation hole

Having measured extremely high level of Tritium from groundwater [URL], Tepco is going to improve the ground in order to stop contaminated groundwater flowing to the sea.

They are going to inject chemical material to the ground from 7/8 to the end of July 2013.

However, the underground structure will be built exactly on one of the borings, which they detected 600,000,000 Bq/m3 of Tritium from. This boring is only 4 ~ 5m from the sea. The radiation readings from the samples of this boring are important to know the potential effect to the sea contamination. It is not known how efficient to stop spread contamination the ground improvement would be but we will lose one of the most suggestive observation holes for sure.

Ils vont injecter des produits chimiques dans le sol à partir du 8 juillet 2013 jusqu’à la fin du mois.

Cependant, la structure souterraine qu’ils vont construire va l’être exactement sur l’un des forages, celui où ils ont relevé 600 millions de Bq/m³ de tritium.  ce forage n’est qu’à 4 à 5 m de la mer. Les relevés de radioactivité des échantillons de ce trou sont importants pour connaitre l’effet probable sur la contamination de la mer. On ne sait pas quelle va être l’efficacité de ce renforcement du sol pour arrêter la diffusion de la contamination mais on va perdre avec certitude l’un des plus significatifs des trous d’observation.

Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
