Tepco “Molten fuel in Reactor 3 is only 26cm to the outside of primary containment vessel”

Tepco admitted most part of fuel melted out of reactor pressure vessel in Reactor 3 [URL]

On 8/6/2014, Tepco announced they assume “most part” of fuel melted out of reactor pressure vessel in Reactor 3.

This is their latest result of existing data analysis.

From their assumption, the emergency coolant system stopped at 20:00 of 3/12/2011 before the workers switched to pump cooling manually.

As a result, fuel started melting down early in the next morning, when was 5 hours earlier than previous assumption.

The analysis says the molten fuel started breaking out of reactor pressure vessel by 7:00 of 3/14/2011. Most part of it dropped to the bottom of primary containment vessel.

However Tepco still doesn’t announce the possibility that the molten fuel even melted out of the primary containment vessel to the environment.

From Tepco’s announcement, the nuclear fuel melted out of the reactor pressure vessel dropped to the bottom of primary containment vessel of Reactor 3.

They estimate it penetrated the base concrete approx. 2m deep, and reached only 26cm to the steel wall of primary containment vessel.

The exact basis of this assumption is not announced. This simulated situation is the one of March 2011.

It is not clear how deeper the molten fuel penetrated after then.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
