Desperate Tepco to drop ice and dry ice to help “frozen wall” be frozen [URL]

On 7/23/2014, Tepco announced they are going to drop ice and dry ice to the unfrozen “frozen wall”.

It’s becoming nearly 3 months, but the preceding frozen wall hasn’t gotten frozen as planned.

Japanese government and Tepco have only 3 measures against contaminated water. Frozen water wall is one of them. They need it to be successfully working so the government of Japan can look like they are controlling the situation.

From Tepco’s report submitted to NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority), they are already prepared to drop 2 t of ice and 1 t of dry ice for 3 days starting on 7/24/2014.

Depending on the temperature, they are going to drop 5.4 t of ice per day from the end of July. They expect to complete the frozen wall by mid August.

There is a possibility that the retained contaminated water may overflow if they drop ice and dry ice. Also it is not clear how it is supposed to reinforce the frozen water.

However there are not many options left for Tepco.

Tepco dropped ice to the unfrozen “frozen wall” on 7/24/2014 as planned.

They put 4 bags of 500kg ice in total. The temperature of contaminated water expected to be “frozen” wasn’t announced.

  1. Dry Ice

The summer days are getting shorter. Soon it will be Autumn. So IF TEPCO is able to freeze the Dirt Slurpee, with ‘Plop Plop Fizz Fizz; their Science Fair Experiment may stay frozen solid until Summer 2015.

I am inclined to consider the Ice Wall Scheme relatively useless at best; and more likely detrimental, due to the likelihood of Nuclear Power Plant Foundation damage. However, ultimately, it is Japan’s Call. The CO2 ‘Warmer Scare’ is not very credible; even if this Dry Ice (Open CO2 shoveling) supplemental chilling effort is a technical violation of the Kyoto Accord.

Resigned, but not hopeful for this harebrained Ice Wall scheme.

  2. I’ve noticed that they’re starting to take their protective clothing *a bit* more seriously now… Hopefully the government will begin to take the health of their nation’s kids a bit more seriously in the coming months.

BTW Just out of interest, does anyone know the minimum freezing temperature of whatever they’re trying to freeze down there, and will dry ice/regular ice actually do anything to freeze nuke material?

    1. H2O

The Japanese are trying to freeze, what can be described as a gravel pit full of water; or an underground river. I assume, based upon the volcanic nature of the island that the shallow water (close to the surface) is about PH – 6.95 and relatively low on dissolved solids. It will freeze at about 30 degrees F or -1 Degrees C. The deeper groundwater is likely close to seawater in density and will freeze at about 0 F.

One problem is the water is flowing and also ebbs & flows with the tide.

Lots of wet gravel to freeze, since the water won’t stay in one place very long.

  3. Why it is TIME to END the FAILED ‘Atoms for Peace’ civilian nuclear power industry.

A vast underground river confluences with the Pacific Ocean EXACTLY at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. This underground river flows in a gravel formation, from the mountains, into the Pacific Ocean, at a rate of on the order of several (perhaps 10) thousand tons of water per day.

Japan is (pathetically) attempting, with a low budget mentality, to create an underground iceburg structure, which may perhaps be better described as: three (3), conjoined underground gravel popcicles, in a flowing underground river. This will intentionally form the most radioactive gravel popcicle(s) on earth. The FDU-3 gravel Popcicle will be, BY FAR, the most contaminated, and Mission Critical portion of this haphazard, cheapyjohn, fuster-cluck. A LARGE, DEEP, FDU-3 Popcicle, would substantially REDUCE the future radioactive contamination of the Pacific Fishery.

Japan, is in all likelihood, pathetically mucking about elsewhere. Japan is continuing to LIE about the magnitude of the disaster, which they, TEPCO, Barack Obama, General Electric, IAEA, WHO and the other lying, incompetent ‘Team Nuke Pukes’, have wrought. Had the money spent for ‘Team Nuke’ Propaganda, been diverted to evacuation, prophylaxis and the Fukushima Daiichi Cleanup; the Largest Man Made Disaster in human history; would already be contained by now.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
