Tepco developing remote controlling robots, wall crawler, airship, RPV diver, etc..

On 9/24/2012, R&D department of Tepco released the latest report about remote technique to invest Fukushima plant.

Tepco can’t investigate the crippled Fukushima plant with the existing technology. They are trying to develop the new types of remote controlling robots.

Their reports showed that they are trying to develop these types of robots.

Wall crawler > Reactor 2

Small helicopter > Reactor 1 and 2

Small airship > Reactor 1 and 2

Wire hanger > Reactor 1 and 2

Wall crawler for curved steel object > Suppression chamber to detect the water level from the outside

Diver > RPV, PCV with self positioning system

They are not to remove debris or fix damaged pipes etc, but to measure radiation level for the further process of decommissioning.

About the wall crawler and small helicopter, Tepco is consulting university of Pennsylvania or Hitachi GE, but they haven’t found the technology holder about Wall crawler for curved steel object or diver.

The amount of budget is not dislosed.

Petit hélicoptère -> Réacteurs 1 et 2

Tepco développe des robots contrôlés à distance

Petit dirigeable -> Réacteurs 1 et 2

Tepco développe des robots contrôlés à distance 2

Funambule -> Réacteurs 1 et 2

Tepco developing remote controlling robots, wall crawler, airship, RPV diver 3

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
