Spare tank for leaking reservoirs started leaking too, Tepco didn’t weld it

Exactly as Fukushima Diary warned, the un-welded spare tank called G6 leaked highly contaminated water while accepting contaminated water from the 2 leaking reservoirs. They measured 12 mSv/h of β ray and 0.06 mSv/h of γ ray on its surface.

400 tones of ground water flow into the plant on the daily basis. In order to manage the shortage of contaminated water storage, they built 7 reservoirs. However, 3 of them leaked highly contaminated water.

To transfer the contaminated water from leaking reservoirs, Tepco built spare tanks.

Since 5/18/2013, they have been transferring 8,400 m3 of contaminated water from reservoir No.3 and 7,500 m3 from reservoir No.6 to the new tanks of 19,000 m3 capacity. [URL]

However, because they built the tanks provisionally without welding, newly transferred water is already leaking. [URL 2]

In the press release of 6/5/2013, Tepco reported this below, [URL 3]

Today (June 5), at around 12:15PM, our corporate company worker found water leaking at a pace of 1 drop per 3-4 seconds from the joint between the second and third layer (counting from the bottom) steel plates of the G6-1 Area No.9 tank side wall during patrol.

The leaking water has not reached on the concrete basement inside the dike, since we have put an absorber on the spot.

The No.9 tank has been isolated (water transfer has been stopped) from the other seventeen G6-1 area tanks at 12:20PM. Furthermore, we will tighten the joint.

The water transfer from the underground reservoir No.6 to the G6 area has also been stopped at 12:45PM for just in case.

We are currently investigating the cause of the issue.
No significant fluctuation was found with the monitoring post readings.

In addition to the leaking spare tank, 270 of 1,000 existing tanks will need repairs from around the spring of 2016 too.

These tanks (1,000 tones per each) were built provisionally just after 311. They are not even welded, only made by bolts and water stops. The gasket parts don’t last for over 5 years.

In 2016, Tepco will also run out of the spaces to build new tanks as well. [URL 4]

Tepco is getting bogged down over contaminated water storage.

The real problem behind Fukushima accident was “Everyone wanted a LIE.”

By sacrificing the long-term benefit, they will increasingly seek short-term benefit. We don’t have a long way to convergent point.
Not to mention, Fukushima Diary says No to it, anytime, anywhere.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
