Significant level of I-131 detected from dry sludge of Fukushima sewage plant after rain in May

Significant density of I-131 was detected from dry sludge of Fukushima sewage plant this May. Cs-134 was also detected.

According to Fukushima sewage public corporation, 2 days after rain (26.5 mm) observed on 5/19/2015, Iodine-131 level started jumping up along with Cs-134/137 density.

It kept on being detected until the end of May. The highest reading was 794.4 Bq/Kg (5/23/2015). 113 Bq/Kg of Cesium-134/137 was also measured this day.

It is assumed that the rain carried I-131 from somewhere to the sewage plant, however Fukushima prefectural government has announced no analysis on this.

The data on June is not published yet.

  1. The fact that I-131 increased at the same time as Cs-134/137 pretty much proves that it came from the Fukushima plant. The fact that I-131 has a half-life of 8 days pretty much proves that fission reactions have occurred at the plant in the past few months. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    1. You’re wrong.

When you see I-131 in sewage sludge and you DON’T see it in the fukushima cooling water that proves that the I-131 you’re seeing is being excreted by medical patients undergoing radiotherapy.

      1. So how would you explain that the I-131 levels ‘started jumping up along with Cs-134/137 density’? Are you suggesting that radiocesium was also excreted by medical patients?

        1. … in addition, they appear to be peeing in the rain.
Europa seems to have also indicated Be-7.
Are the medical patients peeing vertically too?

How much RAI does a patient require post-op after surgical removal of thyroid?

Hmmm…. Occam seems to side with the respectable Mr. Hawes.

          1. https en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotopes_of_beryllium#/media/File:Be7fromcosmicrays.png

Be-7 is a common naturally occurring isotope that is produced by cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere and is present in all rain water everywhere.

          2. Radio-iodine doses vary depending on the case but are typically around several GigaBq of I-131.

        2. The land around fukushima is contaminated with Cs-137/134. Rain water runoff will carry some of that with it.

          1. Medical I-131 can be discharged from cancer treatment hospitals via sewage systems. Why would I-131 levels in the dried effluent fluctuate with rainfall? And what is your source of information that I-131 is not being detected in the Fukushima cooling water?

            1. The same source that Mochizuki-san uses to determine that there is strontium and cesium and tritium in the water.

              TEPCO.

              1. If there were I-131 in the Fukushima cooling water, would you trust Tepco to publish this information?

  2. I’d love to have independent third party verification of those measurements. But until then I have to go with what I’ve got.

    1. Tepco and the Japanese authorities have repeatedly suppressed and continue to suppress information about the severity of the Fukushima disaster. Witness the monstrous lie about a ‘Level 4’ accident; witness Tepco’s failure to report the leak of highly radioactive rainwater into the sea for over 9 months; witness reports that doctors and hospitals are being threatened if they tell their patients that their illnesses are radiation related. So the statement that, according to Tepco, I-131 is absent from the cooling water carries little weight for me personally, and why I turn to other sources like Fukushima Diary for information (or at least clues) about what’s really going on in Japan and elsewhere.

      1. So why aren’t they suppressing the measurements of I-131 in sewage sludge? Seem kind of sloppy to let those through.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
