Having no effect of contaminated water seen in the seawater by the test of Fukushima prefectural government, Fukushima fishery cooperatives decided to restart the test fishing in the end of September.

They commented they are going to strengthen the tests on seawater and marine products.

The products will be distributed for sale.

  1. South Korea bans fish imports from 8 Japan Prefectures, so I suppose the fish can be shipped to the USA & Canada; as well as forlocal consumption.

    Yonhapnews (national/2013/09/06/86/0301000000AEN20130906002251320F) html

SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Yonhap) — South Korea expanded its import ban on Japan’s fisheries products to include all fisheries products from the radiation-hit Fukushima and seven other adjacent prefectures, the government said Friday. “The measure comes as our people’s concerns are growing over the fact that hundreds of tons of radiation contaminated water are leaked daily from the site of Japan’s nuclear accident in Fukushima,” the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said in a press release. “The measure also comes as the government concluded that it is unclear how the incident in Japan will progress in the future and that the information the Japanese government has provided so far is not enough to predict future developments.”

The import ban was later expanded to include 50 products from Fukushima and seven other nearby prefectures. They are Ibaraki, Gunma, Miyagi, Iwate, Tochigi, Chiba and Aomori prefectures.”Under the new measure, all fisheries products from this region will be banned regardless of whether they are contaminated or not,” the ministry said.

When even a minuscule dose of radioactive material, such as cesium or iodine, is detected in any products from any other region of Japan, the government will request additional radiation tests by Japan and their results before allowing shipments of such products into South Korea, it said. “This will effectively keep out any fisheries products that are contaminated even a little by radiation,” the ministry said. In addition, the government has decided to lower the allowed dose of radiation in fisheries products from the current 370 becquerel per kilogram (Bq/kg) to 100 Bq/kg.

  2. “So why not?”

South China Morning Post (SCMP.com) Tuesday, 10 September, 2013, 5:18am

Hong Kong should ban fish products from all of Japan in response to public fears of contamination from ongoing leaks at the Fukushima nuclear plant, a food expert said. Leung Ka-sing, an associate professor at Polytechnic University’s department of applied biology and chemical technology, said it would act as a preventive measure and address fears over radiation. “If the government imposed a ban, the city would still have enough supplies of fish. So why not?” he said.

Professor Stephen Tsui Kwok-wing from Chinese University’s School of Biomedical Sciences said several factors had to be considered when deciding whether or not to ban food imports. They include the health risks, the availability of alternatives and the political impact. Although the World Trade Organisation has rules on minimising trade barriers between members, there are no restrictions on how each country should handle food safety issues.

  3. It is assumed that the Pacific regional bans on Japan Seafood products is MORE about political pressure and long-term safety concerns; and less about immediate perceived danger from some specific load of fish.

One (1) open-sea fish in a thousand, caught 50 kM from Fukushimma, might have a concerning radionuclide contamination level.

Japan reopens commercial fishing in Fukushima and ALL Japan seafood exports face a TOTAL marketplace ban in neighboring nations. The international bans appear to be a direct response to restored commercial fishing in Fukushima waters.

    Sincerely,

    Bill Duff

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
