[Column] Summary of Fukushima situation July~August – The latest problems and the impending crisis

Fukushima plant is heated on-going. It’s important to be informed dynamically.
Here I would like to report what Tepco recognizes to be the problem and what they don’t now.
Not to mention, the latter is more serious.

Two problems in Tepco’s eye – Steam from reactor3 and spreading sea contamination

Tepco is recognizing the steam of reactor3 and the spreading sea contamination to be the primary problems and keeps their eyes on them.
The steam was observed coming up from the top of reactor3 in mid July. It’s been continuously found since then with some blanks.
Tepco stopped the work on the top of reactor3 due to the “steam”, which is very rare for them. They seem to take this seriously.
In the beginning, they stated it was rain water but they are starting to insist it’s from the inside of the vessel.
However, the steam’s radioactive density is higher than the gas inside of the vessel. They don’t know what it is.

The groundwater is flowing into the sea. Now that they officially admitted it’s real, Tepco has to try to stop it.
The compensation money that Tepco needs to pay will be significantly increased due to the sea contamination.
Currently they assume the source is in the underground tunnel. Tepco is building the wall to separate the plant area from the sea.

One problem outside of Tepco’s eye – Rising groundwater

Due to the wall construction, the groundwater level is rapidly increasing.
However, Tepco is not straightly facing the matter for some reason.
Tepco doesn’t seem to have the sense of impending crisis, which can be seen in their press conference.
What they must do right now is to measure the groundwater level, but they haven’t updated the data since 8/2/2013.
They plan to pump up the water ,however the installation will be completed at the end of August.
At this speed, groundwater will come up on the ground about 8/19. The bearing power of soil maybe significantly deteriorated before then.
It’s clear that Tepco will be too late, again.
No one in the company seems to take care of this issue.

Truth is not truth because everyone believes in it. It’s the truth because it’s consistent and can’t be rebutted.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
