Cesium measured from 5000 meters deep in the ocean

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) measured cesium from the Pacific Ocean offshore of North Japan. They said it’s from the Fukushima nuclear power plants.

They took the mud from the bottom of the sea which is 120 m ~ 5,000 m deep.

AIST says it’s not that high level but the closer it goes to the plant the higher the contamination level gets.

水深5千メートルの泥にセシウム 東北の太平洋、原発放出

東日本大震災の震源域である東北地方の太平洋海底で、水深約5千メートルの深海の泥から、東京電力福島第1原発事故で放出されたとみられる放射性セシウムが検出されたことが、産業技術総合研究所(茨城県つくば市)などの研究グループの23日までの調査で分かった。

セシウムが検出された泥は水深約120メートルから約5千メートルまで広く分布。全体として高濃度ではないが、測定結果についてグループの池原研・産総研副研究部門長は「おおむね、福島県に近いほど濃度が高い傾向にある」としている。

Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
