Bypass water discharge to the Pacific turned out “meaningless” / Tepco to continue for a few more months

Bypass water discharge has not decreased groundwater flowing to the plant buildings at least by now.

It has been a month since Tepco started pumping up contaminated groundwater to discharge to the Pacific. They have discharged 6,800 t of contaminated groundwater in total.

However, no decrease has been confirmed in the volume of groundwater flowing to the basement of the plant buildings.

Approx. 400 t of groundwater flows into the plant buildings every single day. Tepco was estimating the bypass project would decrease it by 50 ~ 100 t a day.

Tepco is stating they need a few more months to see the effectiveness.

Bypass water discharge, frozen water wall and ALPS are all Japanese government has as measures against the contaminated water issue.

However, ALPS has never been in full operation since last year due to the continuous problems in all of 3 systems. Preceding frozen water wall hit a snag. There is the possibility that all of the measures fall through.

  1. “There is the possibility that all of the measures fall through.”

    Probability, you mean.

  2. Now, If you had asked me what to do to immobilize the nuclides in the ground water I would have suggested the following:

Install an inner ring of wells around the site. Maintain their water level at high tide plus one meter.

Install an outer ring of wells around the site. Maintain their water level 1/2 meter lower than the inner ring.

That would have maintained a constant hydrostatic pressure across the site and stopped the flow of ground water. While insuring that water flowed from the inner ring to the outer ring and from the outer ring to the surrounding country-side.

Then you could have pumped up and treated contaminated water from inside the site.

    Ah well, nobody asked me.

    1. Silly plan,

Won’t work for the fractured geology of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

The tide is merely one of several signs and symptoms.

The flow of the water is in 3D, not simple I/O or Up/Down.

TEPCO and Japan have been stupid and lying; for so long, they can’t keep the lies straight. They CANNOT deal with and report actual physical science.

      1. Bill Duff is a bit of an EXPERT in these things. He’s singlehandedly penetrated the web of deceit and revealed the corruption and lies in the industry. He tirelessly corrects us and explains complex engineering tasks which not even TEPCO understand. Bill Duff advises on safety, public health, history, diet, weather, frozen wall building, reactor corium fluid and thermodynamics, webcam photo analysis, fuel rod disposition, leaks, earthquake proofing, politics and hitlers scrotum. Bill Duff bravely and selflessly fights on to bring us the TRUTH.

  3. The water must be coming from somewhere, and there aren’t many possibilities. Hint: Has the salinity of the groundwater in the reactor buildings increased?

If bypassing 230t of groundwater per day (on average) has resulted in NO decrease of inflow to the buildings, persisting with and/or increasing the bypass pumping is unlikely to significantly address the problem.

Tepco is running out of options. I give the ice wall less than 25% chance of success, assuming they even complete it. If it fails, what then?

  4. Last Best Hope,

The Japanese HVACR contractor and their STUPID STOOGES at TEPCO and in the Japanese Government have portrayed this ‘Dirt Slupee’ as their ‘Last Best Hope’. That is an advertizing and propaganda LIE; much like virtually everything else; in modern Japan. There is NO basis to even do this project; much less to portray it as hopeful. And it is cynical, to the MAX, to portray this stupidity as the ‘Last Best Hope’.

TEPCO & Japan are lying about the water volume flows in the Groundwater.

The consequences of all these VERY STUPID LIES are: Personal Radiation Poisoning in millions of Japanese, Public Health impacts for Tens of millions of Japanese, and SEVERE DEGRADING of the Pacific Fishery. The HABIT of deliberately LYING about science has severe consequences. It would help, if the malefactors were shot-dead in the streets of Tokyo and Fukushima. This step may be essential to Nipponese Survival; or it may already be too late for that.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
