2.52μSv/h in Kawasaki

Highly radioactive garbage was found in a riverbed of Tamagawa Kawasaki, announced by the Keihin Office of River on 3/23/2012.
It was 2.52μSv/h at 5cm away from the garbage, 1.0μSv/h at 1m away.
The garbage is the collection of cloth, helmet, 18-liter square can etc.. gathered at one place beside a paved road to manage the bank.
A citizen (43) living in Minamiku Yokohama found it out by chance. He usually looked around the riverbeds to support homeless but he took a different way on 3/18. Usually the radiation level is around 0.12~0.17 μSv/h but his dosemeter showed 0.26μSv/h. He found it out and reported to Kawasaki city government. However, local city government hesitated to publish the radiation level which they measured and they took no less than 4 days to announce.

Now the garbage is covered with sheet and sandbag. The radiation level has become 0.46μSv/h at 5cm away, but it’s still 0.87μSv/h at 1m away. Now the 20m area is forbidden to enter.
Because it’s 0.13~0.15μSv/h at 20m area, which is their decontamination limit of 0.19μSv/h, Kawasaki city government is not planning to decontaminate the area.
It is not known if the garbage is flotsam or unlawful dumping.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
