[13,000m3] Tepco takes 2 weeks to stop water leaking, Worker “could be due to the extremely high level of radiation”

Tepco announced they had extremely highly radioactive water leaking to underground. [URL]

From their emergency press conference from 1:30 of 4/6/2013 (JST), there is 13,000 m3 of contaminated water in the storage.

Now Tepco is preparing to transfer the water to the next storage, but it takes about 2 weeks.

There are 7 storages for the contaminated water. The leaking one is No.2. Tepco is planning to transfer the water to No.1. The capacity of the pump is only 40 tones/h, it takes about 2 weeks. Because there is no way of stopping the leakage, the water is going to leak for 2 weeks.

The leaking point is probably North West. 5.838×10^9 Bq/m3 of beta nuclide was measured from the leaked water at 15:00 of 4/5/2013. The sort of water is concentrated salt water. Tepco states the radionuclide is mostly Strontium.

The volume of water to have leaked is not verified yet.

The former Fukushima worker Happy11311 commented on Twitter that the contaminated water contains highly concentrated strontium. Sometimes it’s 200 mSv/h ~ 1 Sv/h of beta ray. The storage facility is made of the parts for ordinary usage, not for nuclear plant. It is only to stock rain water. It’s separated from the ground only by 3 layers of leakage isolation sheet. It can be deteriorated by the high level of beta ray, or damaged by small animals such as rat or a mole.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
