[Major leakage] Tepco transferring contaminated water to new tank, “Not welded but safe”

On 5/3/2013, Fukushima Diary reported, “Tepco not to weld the new emergency tanks of 19,000m3 [URL]”

About the major leakage of highly contaminated water, Tepco is transferring the water from the leaking reservoirs to the “safer” tanks.

According to Tepco, they are going to transfer 8,400 m3 in reservoir No.3 and 7,500 m3 in reservoir No.6 to the new tanks from late May.

The new tanks are to have 19,000 m3 of capacity, but they haven’t been built. Tepco is still improving the ground.

On the press conference of 5/2/2013, Tepco’s spokesman stated these potential tanks will not be welded.

Tepco is going to choose the flange type of the tanks because it’s easier to build.

According to Tepco, they have been transferring the contaminated water to the new “safe” tanks since 5/18/2013.

They reported as below,

This is follow-up information regarding the water leak from the underground reservoirs at Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

An alternating transfer between the underground reservoir No.3 and the underground reservoir No.6 to G6 tank will be conducted since they are sharing the same transfer line.
The water transfer from the underground reservoir No.3 to G6 area tank was started at 10:25 AM on May 25 and temporarily suspended at 9:05 AM today (May 28).

The transfer line will be switched from the underground reservoir No.3 to the underground reservoir No.6 and the water transfer from the underground reservoir No.6 to G6 area tank was started at 9:54 AM today.

Tepco hasn’t made an announcement of Plutonium density of the transferred water and the planned ending time of the transfer.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
