Japanese gov started asking for the international advice for contaminated water issue

Following up this article..JP Gov “There is no technology to remove Tritium from contaminated water”/Appeal international world for technology [URL]

Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry opened the website titled “Request for Information (RFI) for Contaminated Water Issues”.

They have no technology to settle down the contaminated water related problems at this moment. Japanese government accepts domestic / international advice until 10/23/2013.

They mainly seek solutions for the contaminated water storage, Tritium removal technology, decontamination of seawater, understanding and shutting down the groundwater flow.

    1. hi chris,

they want to dump the treated radioactive water and claim
that radioactive material is still present but to lower degree, and that the tritium is still there.

why dont take treated radioactive water turn it into a solid and store it on land. example pour radioactive treated water into a container that has already dry quickset cement powder in it and then, seal containtor, and shake abit to have it mix. it would harden very fast, and mangeable containtors could be created that could be moved to a safer location on land.

then perhaps even poured into a slightly bigger containtor as well,to act as like a protected outer shield.
that quickset stuff hardens in minutes, i recall dad using it when plastering. seems clear it would give the tritium or otther isotopes to escape if closed and contents were seal during the drying of the solid, whether it be a plaster or concrete.

they seem to be focus strictly on wanting to dump into ocean, and seem to
totally take the option of making it a solid off the table.
frankly having it placed into a containtor seems to remove the chance of trituim evaporateing out during the drying process.

also thanks for all your efforts and reporting during this mishap,
      regards

      Clemente Ciamarra

  1. Doable,

Hydrogen isotope separation is possible, even doable. The process would be inordinately expensive and a waste of time for a 12 year half-life material.

So just remove the heavier radioisotopes like cesium, strontium with ALPS and similar processes. Then STORE the tritiated water in a secure medium term watery Tank Farm.

Build the thick, 316SS, multiwall, retrievable, skid mounted tanks. Then secure them in a 30 – 40 meter marine (undersea) tank farm.

An undersea fence, like a submarine base can be constructed, for slightly increased security.

Corium and the Spent Fuel Pools are the BIG PLAYERS. Getting most of the water off the premises will increase the livability of the FDNPP and vicinity. Tritium, relocated in proper storage containers, is and will remain, a minor concern.

    Sincerely,

    Bill Duff

    1. The USA, Russia and England IRRESPONSIBLY and irretrievably dumped nuclear waste in the oceans. The USA toxic radioactive materials were poured into pitch (tar) coated, common barrels and dumped off the USA West Coast. The USSR allowed their nuclear navy to sink, dangerously unattended in the Arctic Ocean.

The proposed undersea TRITIUM only, short-term storage, tank-farm, is quite a different matter.

The matter is of top urgency for the health of Fukushima workers and the continuation of the essential salvage efforts. The proposed solution is FAR and away more responsible, than the earlier dumping by the USA, USSR, Great Britain and others. The ongoing flow of contaminated Fukushima groundwater and the intermittant releases from impoundment, comprise an intolerable situation.

This heavy-water tank farm is a matter of some urgency for Japan coastal safety, health, environment and the restoration of seafood safety. The exact isotopic composition of the hydrogen and oxygen are a matter of some academic interest, but no practical interest.

The accumulated and untreated water is distracting from FAR MORE URGENT matters. The existing international treaties are seriously flawed, particularly with respect to MOX fuel use.

The proposed retrievable tank farm can (should) be monitored internationally, including by NGO groups such as Green Peace and other environmental extremists. Their presence may decrease the amount of lying and in various ways improve the reality and the perception of the crisis. Japan is urged to move quickly and decisively on this SIMPLE, and URGENT matter.

      Sincerely,

      Bill Duff

  2. Grow Glow in the dark hydroponic tomatos at Fukushima nuclear plant. Serve at every UN Security Council meeting, until some diplomat gets a clue to fix a few things…

  3. Dumping into the ocean must not be allowed. There must be another way and perhaps the idea of sealing it in containers with quickset cement might be a solution. Killing all the plankton that makes our oxygen, the krill that feed many species, and the fish that feed on the krill, will lead to lack of food and hoarding of food. The coaslines of Northern California, Oregon, Washington, British Colombia, and Alaska are some of the most pristine and beautiful in the world. We cannot allow radiation to be dumped into the oceans to kill our seafool and pollute our coastlines for the next hundreds of thousands of years.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
