[Insight] Data doesn’t show Tepco dumping contaminated water to the sea, but it’s worse than that.

Last week, Tepco finally admitted the contaminated groundwater is flowing to the sea.

Looking around the media coverage, I noticed there is a huge misunderstanding about this issue. Here I want to correct it.

 

1. The data don’t suggest their dumping, but it’s worse than that.

 

As we all know, Tepco is a liar. The government wants to conceal the fact.

but the sample to have made them confess was the groundwater pumped from the borings.

If they dumped retained contaminated water, it would have been to the sea not to the ground. but the sample is the groundwater, and the radiation level is way higher than seawater.

Whether Tepco is secretly dumping contaminated water to the sea or not, this evidence shows the contamination is traveling from the ground to the sea.

Actually their data is showing the seawater comes up to the ground when the seawater level is higher, and the groundwater comes down when the seawater level is lower. The contamination is moving between the coastal area of the plant and the sea.

This is worse than dumping. We could try to stop them dumping in legal means, but we couldn’t stop the contamination flowing to the sea because of the extremely long coastal line.

 

2. The contamination source is not identified.

 

The other reason why dumping is better is because the source of contamination is not clear.

Tepco was suspecting it might be from the past leakage. Now they are starting to suspect the highly contaminated water retained in the facility called “trench” is leaking to underground.

This is how they have 2 hypothesizes at once, but it might be directly from the crippled reactors actually.

It would be quite easy to identify the source of the contamination. They only need to “color” the coolant water. If they find the seawater colored as well, the contamination is transiting directly from the coolant water.

However, they don’t do it, which suggests something pretty clear.

La semaine dernière, Tepco a enfin reconnu que les eaux souterraines extrêmement radioactives s’écoulent en mer.

En en regardant la couverture médiatique, je me suis aperçu qu’il y a une énorme incompréhension sur cette histoire. Je voudrais la corriger ici.

On sait tous que Tepco est un menteur. Le gouvernement veut le cacher.
mais les échantillons qui les ont obligés à le reconnaître sont ceux des eaux souterraines puisées dans les forages.
S’ils avaient déversé des eaux contaminées en mer, ça aurait été en mer et pas dans le sol. mais ce sont des échantillons d’eau souterraine et leur radioactivité est bien plus forte qu’en mer.
Que Tepco déverse de l’eau radioactive en cachette ou non, cette preuve-ci montre que la contamination voyage en sous-sol jusqu’à la mer.
En fait, leurs données montrent que les eaux marines remontent dans le sol lorsque la marée est haute et que les eaux souterraines descendent en mer lorsque la marée se retire. La contamination oscille entre la zone côtière de la centrale et la mer.
C’est pire que des déversements. On peut essayer d’arrêter avec des moyens légaux des décharges sauvages mais on ne peut pas empêcher la contamination de s’écouler en mer parce que la ligne de rivage est extrêmement longue.

2. La source de la contamination n’est pas identifiée.

L’autre raison pour laquelle des déversements clandestins sont moins graves est que la source de la contamination n’est pas claire.
Tepco suspectait une fuite ancienne. A présent, ils commencent à suspecter que les eaux extrêmement radioactives retenues dans l’aménagement appelé “tranchée” dans la centrale s’infiltrent en sous-sol.
Voici comment ils en arrivent à avoir 2 hypothèses en même temps mais, en fait, ça peut très bien provenir directement des réacteurs dévastés.
Il serait assez facile d’identifier la source de la contamination. Ils n’ont besoin que de “colorer” les eaux de refroidissement. S’ils retrouvent des eaux de mer colorées, il sera clair que la contamination provient directement des eaux de refroidissement.
Néanmoins, ils ne le font pas, ce qui laisse penser quelque chose de très clair.

Ne soyez pas leurs complices.

Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
