46 volcanic quakes and 3 tremors in Mt. Zao in Miyagi this April, Meteorological agency "No immediate eruption risk"

On 5/10/2013, Japan Meteorological Agency announced they detected unusual volcanic activity in Mt. Zao.

Mt. Zao is an an active volcano situated between Miyagi and Yamagata prefecture. The latest eruption was 2/15/1895.

According to Japan Meteorological Agency, 46 volcanic earthquakes were detected this April, which is more than usual. Also 3 volcanic tremors were detected on 4/7, 4/9, and 4/21. It last for 3 mins 20 secs, 4 mins 20 secs, 5 mins 40 secs in each time.

Volcanic tremors were detected on 1/27/2013 as well, but the clinometer detected the changes just before the tremors of 4/7 and 4/21. The clinometer is located in 5km South West of the top of the mountain.

The Agency reports there is no sign of immediate eruption, however, there is no historical record about the eruption sign. It’s not known what could happen before the potential eruption.

Additionally, the Agency comments no fumerole was observed. However, observation camera can’t directly see the crater due to the inefficient location. The fumerole can be seen only when it rises over 200m high.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
