[Assumption overturned] Bypass water already exceeded the safety limit / Tepco “won’t stop pumping up”

Following up this article.. Tepco started pumping up the bypass water to discharge / Tritium density jumped up to 87% of desired safety level [URL]

The tritium density already exceeded their desired safety limit before even starting to discharge.

It was one of the 12 bypass wells. From the sample of 4/15/2014, Tepco measured 1,600,000 Bq/m3 of Tritium. Tepco’s desired safety limit is 1,500,000 Bq/m3.

The contamination level already exceeded before they even complete the detailed analysis to discharge.

The issued well is the closest to the tank area that experienced 300m3 leakage last summer. This measurement must overturn the assumption of Tepco’s discharging the bypass water to the sea. Tepco was assuming the bypass water should not be contaminated.

In the press conference of 4/17/2014, Tepco stated they will not stop using this well. The tritium density would be lower than the safety limit by mixing up with bypass water from other wells.

Katsutaka Idogawa is on SophieCo today.

SS: The United Nations report on the radiation fallout from Fukushima says no radiation-related deaths or acute diseases have been observed among the workers and general public exposed – so it’s not that dangerous after all? Or is there not enough information available to make proper assessments? What do you think?

KI: This report is completely false. The report was made by a representative of Japan – Professor Hayano. Representing Japan, he lied to the whole world. When I was mayor, I knew many people who died from a heart attack, and then there were many people in Fukushima who died suddenly, even among young people. It’s a real shame that the authorities hide the truth from the whole world, from the UN. We need to admit that actually many people are dying. We are not allowed to say that, but TEPCO employees also are dying. But they keep mum about it.

    1. LOL. You don’t suppose living through a tsunami might have caused any heart attacks?

There were no deaths due to acute radiation poisoning. There were no cases of acute radiation poisoning. There will be a statistically significant spike in thyroid cancers in the people in the path of the initial plume to the northwest of the plant. People living in the affected areas will have their average life expectancy reduced by 1 day for every 10mSv they’re exposed to due to increased cancer risk.

Estimated radiation doses of Fukushima returnees withheld for half a year

April 16, 2014, THE ASAHI SHIMBUN, http ajw asahi com/ (article/0311disaster/fukushima/AJ201404160056) – http English kyodonews jp/ (news/2014/04/285470) html

Japan withheld findings on estimated radiation exposure for Fukushima returnees for six months, even though levels exceeded the long-term target of 1 millisievert a year at more than half of surveyed locations. Individual radiation doses were estimated to be beyond 1 millisievert per year, or 0.23 microsievert an hour, at 24 of all the 43 surveyed sites, including ones in the Miyakoji district in Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture, The Asahi Shimbun learned April 15.

The revelation comes just two weeks after the central government lifted the evacuation order for the district on April 1.

To shed a bit of light on the mystery of the Fukushima aftermath, Sophie Shevardnadze talks to the former mayor of one of the disaster-struck cities. Katsutaka Idogawa is on SophieCo today.

KI: I’d like to show you a table with radiation levels around Chernobyl. Radiation levels around Fukushima are four times higher than in Chernobyl, so I think it’s too early for people to come back to Fukushima Prefecture. Here you can see radiation levels in our region, Tohoku. This is ground zero, and the radiation radius is 50-100km, even 200km in fact. Fukushima Prefecture is at the very center. The city of Iwaki, where Futaba citizens moved, is also in Fukushima Prefecture. It is by no means safe, no matter what the government says. Exposing people to the current levels of radiation in Fukushima is a violation of human rights. It’s terrible.

SS: Evacuation advisories are being lifted for some cities in the Fukushima area, but you’re saying that the government is allowing this, despite the danger of radiation?

KI: Fukushima Prefecture has launched the Come Home campaign. In many cases, evacuees are forced to return. Here is a map of Fukushima Prefecture, with areas hit by radiation highlighted in yellow, and you can see that the color covers almost the entire map. Air contamination decreased a little, but soil contamination remains the same. And there are still about two million people living in the prefecture, who have all sorts of medical issues. The authorities claim this has nothing to do with the fallout. I demanded that the authorities substantiate their claim in writing but they ignored my request. There are some terrible things going on in Fukushima. I remember feeling so deeply for the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy that I could barely hold back the tears whenever I heard any reports on it. And now that a similar tragedy happened in Fukushima, the biggest problem is that there is no one to help us. They say it’s safe to go back. But we must not forget the lessons of Chernobyl. We must protect our children.

SS: Your town is moving to a new location, to the neighboring city of Iwaki. Is it safe there? Do you see this as a new start for the people?

  5. Fukushima – very high activity, inhalable dust particles

Marco Kaltofen, Nuclear Science and Engineering http bostonchemicaldata com/ (wpi/mKaltofenNagoya2014) pdf

High Radioactivity Particles in Japanese House Dusts

Hypothesis: The Fukushima Dai‐ichi accident released very high activity inhalable dust particles that travelled long distances.

Introduction: The 2011 earthquake and resulting tsunami in Northeastern Japan led to damages to four of the six nuclear power units at the Fukushima Dai‐Ichi Station. Radiological materials escaped from the reactor units at the power plant site via air‐borne plumes of contaminated gases, aerosols and particles, and by contaminated wastewaters.

Airborne dusts can transport radioactive materials as isolated individual particles containing high concentrations of radioisotopes. Alpha and beta emissions related to fission wastes and dispersed fuel particles are hazardous when inhaled or ingested. Radioactively‐contaminated environmental dusts can accumulate in indoor spaces, potentially causing significant radiation exposures to humans via inhalation, dermal contact, and ingestion. These heterogeneously distributed hot particles can be difficult to detect and measure, making it likewise difficult to determine radiation dose to residents of contaminated areas.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
