[Ecological effect] Swans significantly decreased in the hazard area

Swans come to Fukushima around this time every year. However, the number of swans coming back to Narahamachi is significantly decreased.

Last July, Fukushima Diary reported the population of bird decreased by 30% and the sorts became only 20% of before 311 in Iitatemura. [URL 1]

It could be also because of the ecological change of lakes and ponds to affect their food chain. (cf, [Analysis] What’s happening to the ecology of Japanese lakes ? [URL 2])

Japanese newspapers Yomiuri and Asahi introduced the comment of a local citizen’s organization, “It’s because residents couldn’t feed them well last year.”
About 500 swans used to come to the town before 311.

However these newspaper companies are reporting the different number of swans for some reason. Yomiuri newspaper reported 100 swans came back on 1/26/2013 *1, where Asahi newspaper reported only 50 swans came back on 1/10/2013. *2
It may be because they counted the swans on the different days, but since 2011, Asahi newspaper has been more wary of Fukushima effect. It was Asahi newspaper that reported the shady decontamination and the false report about exposure dose of Fukushima workers.[URL 3] This gap of reported number of swans might be from their stance about reporting Fukushima effect.

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
