Has anyone died from lack of nuclear power ?

Tomari shutdown leaves Japan without nuclear power

Japan is switching off its last working nuclear reactor, as part of the safety drive since the March 2011 tsunami triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima plant.

The third reactor at the Tomari plant, in Hokkaido prefecture, is shutting down for routine maintenance.

It leaves Japan without energy from atomic power for the first time for more than 40 years.

Until last year, Japan got 30% of its power from nuclear energy.

Hundreds of people marched through Tokyo, waving banners to celebrate what they hope will be the end of nuclear power in Japan.

Power shortages

Since the Fukushima disaster, all the country’s reactors have been shut down for routine maintenance. They must withstand tests against earthquakes and tsunamis, and local authorities must give their consent in order for plants to restart.

So far, none have.

Two reactors at the Ohi plant in western Japan have been declared safe. The government says they should be restarted to combat looming shortages.

However, regional authorities would still have to give their approval.

Ministers have warned Japan faces a summer of power shortages.

The BBC’s Roland Buerk, in Tokyo, says the government could force the issue, but so far has been reluctant to move against public opinion.

Organisers of the anti-nuclear march in the capital estimated turnout at 5,500.

Demonstrators carried banners shaped as giant fish. The “Koinobori” banners, traditionally the symbol of Children’s Day, have been adopted by the anti-nuclear movement.

“There are so many nuclear plants, but not a single one will be up and running today, and that’s because of our efforts,” campaigner Masashi Ishikawa told the crowd.

Engineers began the process of shutting down the final Tomari reactor, inserting control rods to bring the fission process to an end.

All operations at the plant will have stopped by 14:00 GMT, a spokesman told Associated Press.

Japan will then be without nuclear power for the first time since 1970.

Businesses have warned of severe consequences for manufacturing if no nuclear plants are allowed to re-start.

In the meantime, Japan has increased its fossil fuel imports, with electricity companies pressing old power plants into service.

If the country can get through the steamy summer without blackouts, calls to make the nuclear shutdown permanent will get louder, our correspondent says.

The six-reactor Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was badly damaged by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Blasts occurred at four of the reactors after the cooling systems went offline, triggering radiation leaks and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.

A 20km (12m) exclusion zone remains in place around the plant.

Some people argue that lack of electricity (ie. lack of nuclear power) can lead to death as a result of not having access to modern treatments that use electricity.

It’s a pretty stupid justification. I mean, electricity can lead to people dying as well. It doesn’t balance out. Also, in the long run, there is no compromise for the billions of deaths and environmental destruction that will eventually result from radioactive contamination.

  3. Want2Understand says:

If you could please, perhaps in a future post(s), explain how this effects daily life in Japan? Are there now or will be scheduled black outs, how will this effect the train system and other means of travel. I am sure this must be difficult in the cities. I would like to understand the effect it has on everyday life. I think we must be willing to sacrifice everyday conveniences if we do not want nuclear power or other forms of pollution, yes? That will never happen here in America people here do not want to be “inconvenienced”. :(

    • Mochizuki says:

JP gov and electric companies may black out cities to threaten people. However, we are not in short of electricity.

  4. Anonymous says:

The electric companies need to understand also that we and the police will be watching for any attempt to create blackouts through negligence. Creating a blackout to “prove” the need for nuclear power would be criminally irresponsible and the power companies will be investigated to see whether they were indeed negligent in allowing the blackout to happen when they could have avoided it.

Power companies should be reminded that blackouts can kill people who rely on electricity for life supporting medical equipment. Any deaths related to a blackout will be investigated and the persons responsible should be made to face criminal charges – and this would include electric company managers who conspire to produce or not prevent blackouts for political purposes.

  8. bristolchick says:

In a hot summer, or a cold winter, with power cuts and shortages, thousands of mainly old and young people will die as has already happened in the European and Russian heatwaves and the freezing temperatures seen in the Northern Hemisphere last winter. Far more people will die than have EVER died from nuclear power. In fact nuclear power has the lowest death rate per terrawatt hour than any other power source. Coal mining and the production of electricity cause many more deaths from accidents and lung disease than any power source.
HOWEVER, ifthe world, misguidedly, eschews nuclear power, climate change will continue unabated and millions will die worldwide from flood, from famine, from displacement etc There will be millions of climate refugees as sea levels rise and cities are flooded, tornados and cyclones intensify and droughts set in other parts of the world.
Japan and Germany are already burning more fossil fuels and their rates of CO2 emmissions have sky-rocketed. Do yourselves a favour and find out the truth about modern nuclear power plants now being built in India, China, USA and UK. Integral Fast Reactors consume stockpiled waste and have passive cooling systems which depend on the laws of physics and not on human operators or electrical motors, to coo; themselves.
Find out more at Professor Barry Brook’s http://www.bravenewclimate.com – he holds the chair of climate change at Adelaide University in Adelaide, Australia and is one of a growing number of environmentalists who have realised that only baseload, dispatchable nuclear power can replace fossil fuels and save us from the ravages of up 2-6 degreestemperature rise. Open your eyes and question the lies.

    • Ozawa says:

The fact that Adelaide University has a climate change chair says a lot. Mainly, that the criminals who have been trying to set up a global system of control through CO2 have bought off what used to be environmentalists. Part of that has been seen with Tokyo Electric, one of the big pushers of both CO2 restrictions and nuclear power throughout the world. Now that the global warming story has fallen apart, we are left with climate change as the reason to allow the elites to control us, though Professor Brook seems to be arguing that a temperature rise is coming. It would be far more impressive he if would be worried about a mini-Ice Age, which might be right around the corner.

Anyway, I did open my eyes and question the lies, particularly of so-called environmentalists who actually work for people like the Rockefellers and whoever owns Tokyo Electric. The title of “Climate Change Chair” is very dubious, as we hardly understand climate to begin with, and this is a political way of phrasing things. It sounds to me like “Democracy Promotion Chair”, which means overthrowing all non-Western countries in the world so that the Western Corporatocracy can plunder them.

Ya…cause there is no other way to create power…
Just because its not mainstream and its not supported by government?
Their is plenty of prove free energy technologies.
How about people get their heads out of their asses and stand up for something.
We don’t NEED nuclear AT ALL, what we need is the END of suppression of free energy technologies.
If we spent 20% of the effort trying to get to the bottom of the oppression of these technologies it solves many problems all over the world not just in one place. Watch ‘Thrive’ if you don’t understand.
