The Yellow cover of the container vessel is not on the reactor! All the bolts are undone! If the core is melted and caused this, how can they remove it?
Reactor 4 was not operating at the time of the disaster. It didn’t contain any fuel, as all of it had already been transferred to the spent fuel pool a few months earlier. As I understand it, the most likely reason for the explosion of the containment building of reactor 4 was hydrogen from reactor 3.
There was also a fire at the spent fuel pool, but I don’t really know what burned exactly. The SFP was really hot (IIRC, >80 degrees Celsius to boiling on March 15), but there was water in the SFP at all times and later inspections and measurements showed the spent fuel rods not to be significantly damaged, so it is unlikely the fuel itself was burning. Please correct me if you have better information.
