1 trillion yen to prepare to take out nuclear fuel

Nuclear energy is known to be cheap.
Tepco and Nuclear Damage Liability Facilitation Fund have made a capital plan to invest 1 trillion yen to prepare for taking out the melted nuclear fuel by 2021, when they will finally start to take out fuel.

To avoid bankruptcy, Tepco is going to apply for public fund.
The process to take out the melted nuclear fuel is supposed to take additional 10~15 years. More trillions of yen will be needed to abandon the nuclear reactors.
However, the technology of removing the melted nuclear fuel has not been developed.

  1. First they lived off nuclear energy, now they will live off pretending to solve the nuclear disaster they have created and mismanaged, taxing the public for it.

The ethical decadence of our time is really appalling. And worst is that such cynic murderous bloodsuckers have too good chances of getting away with it instead of being lynched by an angry mob as would be normal and healthy.

  2. Others above tout the low cost of Nuclear but I maintain that that is only a “snapshot” of when everything is working great; what happens when you look at the BIGGER picture? Many experts now maintain that Nuclear is not only MORE expensive but the RISK and time to construct is no longer acceptable!

Solar power may be cheaper than electricity generated by fossil fuels and nuclear reactors within three to five years because of innovations, said Mark M. Little, the global research director for General Electric Co. (GE) May 26, 2011 http://is.gd/L0V2hP

Then consider Japan as a test case; they WERE a major nuclear “user” and now they have a Trillion Dollar Eco-Disaster that is affecting their entire Country, how would California (and or the USA) pay for a similar event? Where would people relocate to and what would they do for housing, since their home owners insurance has a nuclear exclusion? If this happened in San Onofre, the “coastal” real estate loses alone would be more than a trillion dollars and the rest of the USA is downwind.

If people really knew the true cost of Fukushima, the people would demand CHANGE and that is something that some of those in Government and the entire Nuclear Industry want to avoid at all cost!

What will determine the total cost of their “Trillion Dollar” Eco-Disaster?

Please feel free to add your comments and or estimates to this list:
     Decommissioning costs
 Loss to all other radioactive decontamination caused by this Disaster.
 Loss of revenues by Tepco
 Loss to TEPCO’s share holders caused by radioactivity
 Loss of Japanese personal income caused by radioactivity
 Loss to Japanese businesses caused by radioactivity
 Loss of all Japanese health costs related to radioactivity
 Loss due to unusable Japanese Land related to radioactivity
 Loss due to Japanese housing caused by radioactivity
 Loss of Japanese Property Values caused by radioactivity
 Loss of fishing grounds caused by radioactivity
 Loss of manufacturing caused by radioactivity
 Loss to the value of the Yen caused by radioactivity
 Loss to other Utilities caused by Fukushima’s radioactivity
 Loss to Japans credit rating caused by Fukushima’s radioactivity
 Loss to the Japanese peoples Lives because of radiation

  3. We now are being ruled by those in Nuclear Denial*; instead of by Leaders that demand an end to the Trillion Dollar Eco-Disaster RISK that Nuclear poses to mankind! The nuclear industry is fighting tooth and nail to maintain it’s market share yet NOW Solar (of all flavors) is far less to construct, faster to construct and carries with it N☢ Nuclear radioactive baggage that can kill an economy and or those nearby!
    Ask The Japanese!

The illogical belief that Nature cannot destroy any land based nuclear reactor, any place anytime 24/7/365!

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
