Breaking News: 110 micro Sv/h in Setagaya

大きな地図で見る

In Setagaya, Tokyo, ward mayor held an emergency press conference at 10PM, 10/28/2011.

They announced that they measured 110 micro Sv/h near a supermarket, “Powerlarks Setagaya” in Setagaya Yawatayama.

Now they are conducting the further investigation with Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to deceive us as soon as possible.

According to their announcement, at 1PM of 10/28/2011, a citizen reported that they found a hot spot.

Setagaya ward reported this citizen recording to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Then the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology measured it and they report that they found:

  • 4.7 micro Sv/h at 1m high from the ground
  • 10 micro Sv/h at 1m high from the ground
  • 110 micro Sv/h
  • 30~40 micro Sv/h on the ground.

If an average citizen measured it, it might be way higher.

The supermarket was closed at 6:30PM. They will be closed tomorrow too.

  1. How long will it take for people to ralize that all of Japan, Canada, the United States and Mexico should have begun to be evacuated in an orderly fashion 6 months ago ?… Massive waves of horrible deaths are coming all across the land, and the evacuation will then have to be chaotic… A true pandemonium is coming to this planet in a few more months, specially in the Northern hemisphere. Some of these radioactive isotopes are of extreme long half-lives. Is time to leave this planet to be roborn elsewhere. In our galaxy, like in most other galaxies, this is what happens as soon as civilization evolves and atomic energy is discovered: radioactivity soon turns the planet incapable of sustaining organic life any longer. Now it’s our turn to be in this position.

  2. Suggestion for Japan residents to go to playgrounds to take readings where children play and report the findings. I have a pregnant daughter and grandson living in Hikone Shiga. I am worried.

  3. もっと悪いの放射線は、私が牧草地に入るたびに、 – それは終わり決して? = there is more higher radiation every time i go out side//

  4. They made a big show of explaining how that spot in Kashiwa was the product of special local conditions and weather in an area with relatively high deposition to begin with. This place in Setagaya is twice the reading they gave us for Kashiwa. There are likely to be at least hundreds of such places in Setagaya alone.

  5. These data indicate peak values , not the average for Tokyo, The average is way beyond the threshold value. Mostly these peak values stem form concentration of caesium salts from rainwater in mud or in stone. Even these peak values are not that dangerous. It is indicating MICRO Sievert, not mili- Sievert per hour. The collection and cleaning up of these spots is not a problem to the Japanese state and will be done shortly after measuring these occasional spots. The average radiation load of people in Tokyo is generally not so very far away from the normal background radiation. From al the sources of risk to life this level of radiation is negligible. Better have attention to bacteriological food safety ,safety in travel like car accidents, and labour accidents like in carbon mining : the risk of dying prematurely of radiation is taking away some hours of life duration expectation, these other sources take expectation away in the order of days and moths or years. Smoking and heavy drinking subtracts like 15 years from your life duration expectation. Even in this Fukoshima incident, radiation risk is over rated in the popular press and on these kind of internet sites. The Fukoshima radiation exposure, will not cause a notable dent in life expectation in Japan. But an possible economic crisis caused by an exit out of nuclear power generation, on the contrary, could destroy years of life expectancy , as it did in comparable circumstances in Russina and Argentinian crisis! In the balance of deadliness between economic crisis and radiation ,economic crisis is the thing to avoid. Japan should immediately continue with generating nuclear power, after the fixing of tsunami and earthquake risk potential at its plants, just to avoid economic backlash. Alternative sources of power generation are just a dummy teat, because of their lack of potential. Politicians that utter these kind of “solutions” just sell impossible dreams, without knowing what the technology is capable off. Japan became a strong nation with the help of cheap nuclear energy and will lose its status if it would reverse this sound policy.

    1. Did you personally identify all the hot spots in Tokyo or map them?

If not, please abstain from verbose but vacuous comments.

  6. Tokyo, the most populated city in the world, clearly is not safe now. The Japanese should NOT put up with that. Nor should the world at large!…

There needs to be a MUCH more concerted & dramatic effort to overcome these ongoing meltdowns, as achieved during the Chernobyl accident…
    Learn from Chernobyl–great lesson!!

I understand that prevailing winds do NOT favor Tokyo in coming seasons….
Not to mention, what’s left of the great Pacific Ocean!!! For shame, Japan!!

If you do not care about your own lives, at least FIGHT for your CHILDREN!!

  7. i was there this morning, some reporter, two or three helicopter, no one from the government,
some concerned neighbors but not much!

i checked with two geiger counter, both are calibrated,
    surrounding area: 0.20uSv/h
    the entrance: 0.50 uSv/h
    across the street: 0.13- 0.15 uSv/h

    i could not walk in!

    in all daijobu desu!

  8. I wish I could do something…this is horrible for the Japanese people and the entire planet, and there are hundreds of these death factories all over the planet. If there is some kind of bad weather, flooding, earthquake, snow, which cuts supply lines or any other number of scenarios which cause power or workers to be cut off from these death factories then we are seriously all going to perish.

  9. Why doesn’t the WORLD require Japan to encase the hole complex in thick concrete, chernobyl-style? Bury it. Bury it now. Why is nobody doing anything? It’s just getting worse and worse.

  10. it is indcredible in what cold way some poeple argue, always finding arguments for nuclear energy usage,

they do not realise nature, human life and related moral & ethics anymore.

they are cold, they are frustrated, the only thing that they want is to be rigth in their technical opinion, they only want to demonstrate that green thinking is nonsense

and they dont realise what is happening.

it is no game anymore. we had tschernobyl.

and no we had a second chance, but the thing is much more worse than tschernobyl.

there is no moral to compare accidents by traffic or alcoholism with danger of nuclear energy…that is absolutely stupid….

  11. and something further:

    “we had tschernobyl”…not we “had”

it is still there….it is still a huge problem

fukushima is a signal to stop this….. it is a very serious thing…

if we start tu argue the way one person did in this blog, like comparing death trough traffic or something else with risks of nuclear energy, we can stop care about anything now… i think here is a barrier in moral and ethics..anytime a human has to realise when he has to turn back…

About this site

This website updates the latest news about the Fukushima nuclear plant and also archives the past news from 2011. Because it's always updated and added live, articles, categories and the tags are not necessarily fitted in the latest format.
I am the writer of this website. About page remains in 2014. This is because my memory about 311 was clearer than now, 2023, and I think it can have a historical value. Now I'm living in Romania with 3 cats as an independent data scientist.
Actually, nothing has progressed in the plant since 2011. We still don't even know what is going on inside. They must keep cooling the crippled reactors by water, but additionally groundwater keeps flowing into the reactor buildings from the broken parts. This is why highly contaminated water is always produced more than it can circulate. Tepco is planning to officially discharge this water to the Pacific but Tritium is still remaining in it. They dilute this with seawater so that it is legally safe, but scientifically the same amount of radioactive tritium is contained. They say it is safe to discharge, but none of them have drunk it.
